Spring Gardening Ideas in Surrey

Spring is here at last. It is time to get your spades and shovels out. Gardening can be a rewarding experience that reduces stress and relaxes us. The fresh air, sunshine and exercise can go a long way towards making us mentally stronger and physically fit. These health benefits of gardening can be enhanced by planting edibles that can add to our diet!

Edible Gardens:

Planting an edible garden means you can also taste the fruits of your labour. Beginners can work on planting a small vegetable garden by following a few simple steps such as:

  • Choose a convenient patch that is easy to water, with ample sunshine hours and suitable soil conditions
  • Suggested vegetables to start with are tomatoes, peppers, salad leaves like lettuce or kale, zucchini etc. Seeds can be cheaper whereas starting with seedlings can be somewhat easier.
  • Prepare the soil and follow a calendar for best planting dates
  • Ensure timely watering of the plants and use organic compost if possible

These are just some of the recommended simple gardening tips to enjoy your own organic home grown veggies.

Seedy Saturday:

The last average frost date for south coastal British Columbia is March 28. This is a handy reference point for gardeners to get ready to take full advantage of the growing season ahead. Get a great start on this year’s garden at the Historic Stewart Farm’s annual seed and plant sale and seed exchange

Location: Stewart Farm House, 13723 Crescent Rd
Date & Time: April 1, 2017 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Aspiring green thumbs and avid gardeners alike are invited. All varieties grown in the Stewart Farm gardens are considered heirlooms – non-GMO varieties that have been grown for at least 100 years. Master Gardeners and other experts will be on site to answer your gardening questions. This can be a great way to get inspiring gardening ideas as well as socialise around your gardening hobby. The event is family friendly with activities and crafts for children.
