A Ghazal Night to Remember by Bollywood’s Rising Star – Tauseef Akhtar

A Ghazal Night to Remember by Bollywood’s Rising Star – Tauseef Akhtar

On the evening of 19th March 2017, Hard Rock Casino was sprinkled with colourful Indian sarees and salwar-kameez. Ghazal fans, dressed to kill in all their glam and glitter, were getting ready to enjoy the tribute to the legendary Jagjit Singh. And so the stage was set for a nostalgic evening of ghazals, which I think of as somewhere between song and poetry.

Surrey’s own Kamal Sharma of KVP entertainers kick-started the evening with his ever-smiling face as he greeted everyone with a Happy Nowruz (Persian New Year) – his passion for ghazal and Bollywood music showing in everything he does. Kamal brought on Mr. Kabir Bedi who connected naturally with the day’s creative audience as he celebrated the creativity within. Mr. Bedi interspersed the ghazals with stories from the legendary Jagjit Singh’s life journey:

The story of Jagjit Singh

Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ki har khwahish pe dum nikle – Millions of desires reside in my heart and each desire can burst this heart.

Jagjit was born in 1941 in Jalandhar, Punjab, and he started to get noticed as a little boy. He was named Jagmohan at birth until his  father’s friend, a learned man who knew astrology, told his father that the boy would go on to  win hearts all  over the world. On his advice, Jagmohan was renamed to Jagjit, which translates to “the one who wins the world.”

True to his name, while studying in college in Jalandhar, Punjab, Jagjit used to catch his friends and make them listen to his songs. He would say to his friends, “A day will come when you’ll pay money and buy a ticket to listen to me.” Years later in Mumbai, he saw his college-time friend Lallan after one of his concerts in Mumbai, so he asked Lallan, “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?” To that Lallan replied, “Had I told you, you would’ve given me a free front seat VIP pass. But today I didn’t want that because I’d promised my wife that I’ll spend money and buy a ticket to hear you sing.”

In 1965 Jagjit Singh took the Pathankot Express from Jalandhar, Punjab, to Mumbai (then Bombay) and struggled to make a place for himself in the Bombay film industry. Fame and recognition took long coming, and finally came with his first album – The Unforgettables – in 1978.  Jagjit went on to sing his next big album with the great Gulzar – Mirza Ghalib, and then there was no looking back for him.

Talented young prodigy Tauseef was singing at a party when Jagjit Singh first heard him and told his father – “give me this son of yours.” Jagjit took this gem and polished it to perfection. Tauseef is no imitation of Jagjit Singh – he sings in his own unique and mesmerizing voice.

Saluting the legend of Jagjit Singh with the all-time-favourite romantic ghazal kal chaudvi ki raat thi, Tauseef set the tone for the evening.

The first half of the concert was romantic and melodious, pulling at heartstrings with all-time favourites like Ye daulat bhi le lo and honthon se chhoo lo tum, among others.

Tauseef was accompanied by talented instrumentalists Manas Kumar on violin, Sushant Sharma on guitar, Azhar Warsi on keyboard, Salim Akhtar on dholak, and Ashish Jha on tabla. We heard and applauded these artists’ instrumental talent as we neared the finale.

The second half of the show was interactive as the audience sang along some of the chorus in mostly upbeat songs. Since we were an audience of hard core ghazal lovers, we were too happy to sing along.

Since we are a heavily Punjabi demographic, Tauseef was bang on as he ended the evening with upbeat Punjabi tappe and the highly popular, foot-tapping number Damadam Mast Kalandar.

All in all a great Nowruz celebration with KVP Entertainers’ first event of 2017 and Bollywood’s rising ghazal talent.
