Surrey604 Teams Up with JoyTV’s Fraser Focus to Discuss the Future of Media

In the wake of massive layoffs and downsizing within the traditional media industry, Daman and Fatima Beatty of Surrey604 join Dean Atwal and Leah Bolton of JoyTV’s Fraser Focus to discuss the future of media.

Although they exist on very different platforms, Fraser Focus and Surrey604 have a great deal in common. Fraser Focus is a television show on JoyTV, hosted by Dean Atwal and Leah Bolton. Much like Surrey604, the show features “local faces and local places.” Each week Dean and Leah profile people and stories from the Fraser region. JoyTV is a creation of Moses Znaimer, the visionary behind CityTV, MuchMusic and ZoomerMedia. Znaimer pioneered a distinctive style of broadcasting, inspired in part by Marshall McLuhan, which emphasizes a strongly local, hip and casual format aimed at young audiences. This raw format is also what makes Fraser Focus so similar to Surrey604, an independent, grassroots media outlet based in Surrey, but it is also the key to their survival in the converging world of digital media.

In a two-part conversation, Surrey604 explores life behind the scenes at JoyTV (in the video above), and JoyTV features Surrey604 on this episode of Fraser Focus (below) which aired Sunday, April 30th, 2017.
