The Walrus Talks National Tour Comes to Surrey

The Walrus Talks Conversations about Canada:

We Desire a Better Country brings Order of Canada members and youth leaders to discuss the next 150 years of Canada

For the past nine weeks, The Walrus has been traveling across the country on a national tour focusing on the future of our country. On Monday, May 15, this unmissable event series, a Signature Initiative of Canada 150, arrives in Surrey.

Featuring fifty members of the Order of Canada and fifty youth leaders, The Walrus Talks Conversations about Canada: We Desire a Better Country tour has been running since March 1, visiting the thirteen provinces and territories over thirteen weeks. Each event features a unique line-up of members of the Order of Canada and youth leaders, bringing a wide range of perspectives to the anniversary of Canadian confederation. These extremely popular events have been sold out across the country and have seen fascinating conversations, incredible connections, and lively crowds.

According to Shelley Ambrose, executive director of the Walrus Foundation and publisher of The Walrus.

“It will provide Canadians with opportunities to participate and celebrate together; shape a more inclusive vision of Canadian society, its people, and what it means to be Canadian; and recognize the exceptional Canadian people, places, achievements, and events that will shape our country for the next fifty years.”

There will be seven speakers who will each take the stage for seven minutes, including spoken word poet Mustafa Ahmed, five-time Olympian Charmaine Crooks, filmmaker and virtual-reality creator Paisley Smith, and First Nation leader Kim Baird. Following the event, the audience is invited to a reception with food, drink, and conversation between the audience members and speakers.

The Walrus Talks will take place on Centre Stage at Surrey City Hall on Monday, May 15. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the event starts at 7 PM. Tickets are free and can be reserved via Eventbrite.
