Perminder Chohan – The Immigrant Dream

Perminder Chohan – The Immigrant Dream

Many of us have dreams and aspirations and we hope and pray that these come true for us. But as stated by Colin Powell ‘a dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.’ This is exactly the case with Perminder Chohan, an immigrant to Canada who is now a name synonymous with the Finance industry and a prominent figure in the South Asian Community.

Chohan (52) is the Managing Director of Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network (DFSIN) – Richmond South and is known for the only office within the Desjardins network and in the insurance industry who ‘fires’ advisors who are not keeping company standards. He believes that this strategy has only helped him and in turn others as well as this teaches one how to be accountable for what they need to do. Accountability is a key factor for success according to Chohan.

Perminder has personally trained over 300 advisors in the field of insurance, some of which have now gone on to earning a paycheque close to over half a million dollars. Not bad for having just come into the country with no work experience here. Most of his advisors are immigrant families who have just migrated here in the hopes of providing a better life for their families. He says that “I feel very accomplished when I help others also achieve a goal which they could’ve only dreamt of, it is never easy to just pack up and move to a different place without any other guidance.”

In his personal life, Perminder is happily married to his wife of 27 years Deep Chohan, he has a teenage daughter Henna and son Armaan. On a daily basis, Chohan is an early riser and is usually up by 6 am every morning, planning out his day. Within his office DFSIN – Richmond South, he owns 5 offices which are located in Richmond, Delta, Surrey, Abbotsford, and Calgary. Along with managing five offices, over 300+ advisors, over 20 staff, Perminder also manages to take part in the community and can be seen at many social gatherings.

His philanthropic work for the community and the lower mainland is also another motivation for him he states. He supports over 36 charities including Hospitals, Sports Teams, Food Banks, and many more.

He believes that the community has served him very well and he owes a major part of his success to the community, he says, “it is my duty to give back as without them, I would be no one.” His humbleness comes from his humble beginnings as he had no business background before moving to Canada and also like many others worked very many odd jobs, started small businesses and saw what struggle means. He says that experience has only humbled him and he’s thankful for even that.

When asked about his 5 year or 10 year goal, he says he plans things but to him he says “there are no guarantees in life so I try to take each day as it comes, every day is an opportunity to learn and improve and I’m constantly learning and improving, I’m just grateful to have come this far and If I can do it, anyone can.”
