Silences and Echoes – KVP Entertainers Event

Silences and Echoes – KVP Entertainers Event

Silences and Echoes are two stories of love loss and betrayal, written in theatre style originally in Hindi, and adapted to English for the show. Each 30-minute-long story, the first narrated by Suma Muralidhar and second by Sushil Rattan, at Vancouver’s Fraser View Banquet Hall on Sunday May 28, was packed with passion. Producer Deepti Rattan from the Natya Bharti Academy says,” The text on love, loss, betrayal and redemption has been beautifully adapted in English by a theatre friend.”

Director Manoj Tiwari, part of the visiting team, was happy with the acoustics at Vancouver’s prestigious Fraser View Banquet Hall. Suma’s act started as she came and sat on a bench she called hers in Goa, India. She was watching a church wedding across the road that made her reminisce about her own wedding at the same church 15 years ago.

As she talked of her rotting marriage and painful separation, Suma explored the typical Indian lack of understanding in society when a couple separates. Family and friends usually have two questions for the separating wife, whether her husband was abusive or was he unfaithful.

Most Indian society does not want to understand the loss of love and connection in marriage, so they judge as a culture. Moving from bench to bench in Goa, Suma’s lonely character tried to find closure.

Sushil Rattan came up on stage next with his story of love loss and betrayal. As part of Doctors without Borders in Afghanistan, Sushil talked about a time before 9/11 happened. Prepare to hear a raw story that will hold you glued to your seats.

Sushil’s character was drinking incessantly, just short of the tipping point, remembering the darkest time of his life. “What lures you the most always holds within it, a bit of terror,” said Sushil Rattan.

As always, Silences and Echoes was a well attended event, echoing KVP Entertainers’ deep-rooted commitment to bringing the best of South Asian culture to Metro Vancouver.
