Join the Fun at Surrey Art Gallery’s Family Summer Art Party!

July 15, 11am − 3pm |

Drop in and get creative with clay, chalk, collage, and more! Surrey Art Gallery invites you and your family to our first ever Family Summer Art Party on Saturday, July 15 from11am to 3pm. There will be artmaking activities throughout the event and an interactive storytelling show at 12pm and 2pm that explore the theme, “Maps, Making & Me!” The event is free and everyone is welcome—children must be with an adult.

Step into our TechLab to play an old Chinese lottery game called Pak Ah Pu in the exhibit High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese. You’ll journey to different Chinatowns in British Columbia through poetry, videos, stories, and beautifully painted watercolour maps. Let these artworks inspire you as you record your own creative discoveries and drawings in your personalized art book that looks like a Pak Ah Pu game card. Share what your world is like through contributing to a collaborative clay landscape and colourful chalk map in the courtyard. You’ll also get to sculpt a personal game piece in clay, then put it into action and try your luck at both modern and ancient board games.

At 12pm and 2pm, join Pangaea Arts in the Studio Theatre to enjoy Stories on Wheels! A high-energy comic performer tells stories using illustrated picture cards displayed in a magnificent wooden stage attached to the back of a bicycle. This historic form of Japanese street theatre will bring the history of the early Chinese coal mining community in Cumberland Chinatown on Vancouver Island to life. Renowned musician Gelina Jiang will provide live musical accompaniment. You’ve never been told a story this way before, and you are invited to participate!

High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese is on display at Surrey Art Gallery until August 26. This interactive exhibit tells stories of 19th century to present-day Chinese immigration to the west coast of Canada. Also on view is Arts 2017: Reflections on Canada, a juried exhibition of local artists coordinated by the Arts Council of Surrey and presented in conjunction with Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Surrey Art Gallery is located at 13750-88 Avenue, Surrey, BC, Canada. 604-501-5566 |

HOURS: Tues-Thur 9am-9pm | Fri 9am-5pm | Sat 10am-5pm | Sun 12-5pm | Closed Mondays and holidays.
