Meet Surrey Girl, Samantha Lenz

Meet Surrey Girl, Samantha Lenz

Freelance Journalist & Blogger

Growing up, soccer was my life. We spent a lot of time on the fields and it’s a bond that can’t be described. My favourite thing about growing up in Surrey were the friendships I formed as a child. I am proud of where I’m from because it’s where I grew up. I made memories, my life, my family. I like knowing that I have roots somewhere and that I can take my son back there and show him where I came from.

A favourite memory of mine has to be the endless amount of birthday parties at a place called Walley’s World. If you’re from Surrey you know where I’m talking about. It has a batting cage, endless arcade games, a miniature race car track. It was the best! I like that on one side of the City you have the ocean and the other you have farmland. It’s such a diverse area.

I am a big mental health advocate. I myself have struggled with depression and anxiety for over 10 years and hate how much of a stigma is still behind mental illness. I want to raise more awareness about it and hopefully bring to light how debilitating it can be. When I am not writing for other companies and clients, I have my own blog where I talk about life as a single parent and how depression has affected me and how to cope with it.

What does being a Surrey Girl mean to you? I think when someone says “Surrey Girl” I think it means strong. We have been criticized and given a reputation for years – and the fact we have been able to stand tall and be proud of where we come from says something!

About The Surrey Girl Project | The goal of The Surrey Girl Project is to change what people think of when they hear the term ‘Surrey Girl’ by highlighting some of the diverse and talented women born and/ or raised in Surrey. Our hope is to flip the term upside down and give it a makeover, to show how amazing it is to be a female from Surrey. Photo Credit: Ally Fotografy
