City Dream Centre Raising Funds to Provide Mobile Dental Care For Surrey’s Needy

Imagine driving all the way to Chilliwack, winding down a farm road and parking in the middle of a field.  Walking over bumpy grass, rounding the corner in the fading evening light and finding a scene set for a queen.

In candlelight and the sweet purple glow of dusk, the fire cracked in the pit behind you.  The smell of roasted chicken and popcorn and in the distance…something vaguely cow like.

Soft music is playing and the beautiful people are beginning to arrive.  They mingle among the black tie staff carrying trays of temptations.  It is the kinda of scene that makes you want to watch your language and sit up straighter.

I found a table covered with cheese and olives and would have happily spent the entire night there but was curious about this “family style” service of food prepared by White Table catering.

The tables were very long and sitting at them, surrounded by people, you really did feel like it was Thanksgiving dinner with a very rich family that you had just met.  Family style service means that you pass dishes of food to people around you and share a meal just like a family which is probably why they call it… family style… nevermind…

City Dream Centre is raising money to buy a full size mobile dental truck with the dream of using it to assist low income families and vulnerable populations find their smiles again.

The worst thing about struggling financially is having problems with your teeth and being unable to afford to do anything about it.  Living with a toothache, living with health problems caused by bad teeth, trying to find a job when you are missing teeth, good dental care is key to supporting people who are struggling.  Getting their smile back can change their lives.

Catered by White Table catering, the family service style food was so much fun. You really got to meet new people who were seated right next to you. I sat across from Claire Roy who attended with her husband.

“This is an incredible cause. I wanted to see the truck out there. We were happy to come and support this.”

Seated at long magically decorated tables with friendly people passing food just like at thanksgiving, you really felt like you belonged to this one very happy and large family.

Sitting beside me were two friends with some experience in beautiful smiles. Michele Phillip and Cindy Dueck

“I feel that people respect you more if you have a good smile.  A healthy smile give you confidence and makes you smile even more. If your gums and teeth aren’t healthy, it affects all your organs. It is really important to have good dental care for over all health.”

Nobody was thinking about dental care as we laid into the array of desserts and tempting treats laid out for our pleasure.

City Dream Centre founder, Loretta Hibbs gave a moving account of how her emotions got the better of her when she toured an inner city school in Surrey and realized that only miles from where she lived, children were going to bed hungry, without warm clothes or school supplies.  The dental bus is part of the dream this organization has of providing loving and non judgemental care for those in our immediate communities that need a hand up.

Each speaker told their personal story of how their interaction with vulnerable people changed their lives and birthed this dream in them.  By the time you had heard all the stories and about the dreams this group had in mind, you were ready to give them everything in your wallet.  We are so fortunate to be able to give and so thankful for groups like this that give us a way to support initiatives right in our own communities.

People were rushing to buy the big balloons full of prizes or bid on a silent auction item or just give because it felt so good to do so.

The evening was magical.  Don’t miss your opportunity to attend this event or to support the cause.  Go to or visit their thrift shop, For the Love of Thrifting at 106-19211 Fraser Highway, Surrey, BC, Canada.
