Born in the city of Chennai, India, Cimmaron Kaur began her career at the young age of 15 selling designer buttons. Fashion began as a hobby – Cimmaron would spend 40 000 to 50 000 rupees (approx $896 CDN) each month on fabrics and make her own clothes from her designs. It didn’t take long for the owner of that fabric store to realize Cimmaron’s talent. He provided her with scrolls of fabric and asked her to design garments to sell in his store. It was that first experience that got the ball rolling for Cimmaron. Her interest in fashion led her to Dehli where she worked hard to learn about the craft and the business. Along the way she has worked with some of the top designers in India such as friend and mentor, Rina Dhaka and Kavita Bhartia. Cimmaron moved to Canada in 2008, made Surrey her home and opened her own boutique, Nyasa Couture a year ago. She brings 23 years of experience in the high fashion industry and a passion for fashion. Cimmaron has a loyal client base not only locally, but also internationally in India, UK, and the United States.
We had a chance to visit Cimmaron at Nyasa Couture located in the Payal Business Centre. Every piece in her store is carefully designed and constructed by Cimmaron and her team of local seamstresses. The unique garments in her boutique can be custom tailored for the client. In addition to her custom designs, Nyasa also carries ready –to- wear clothing for men and women. She also designs one-of-a-kind handbags, custom children’s wear and maternity wear. She works closely with her clients to create pieces that are unique and fashion forward. Cimmaron says that she wants her boutique to be a place where people can find something new and exciting whenever they visit. What is even more special about Cimmaron’s business is that her sister is a close partner in India and her adorable son has his name in her collection (check out the photos!).
Nyasa Couture is known for conversions; turning an old outfit into something completely fresh and unique. Cimmaron’s conversions are simply amazing. This is a great idea for those of us who have those outfits sitting in the back of our closets but hesitant to give them away and clueless with what to do with them. It is a great resource to have access to a local designer who works with you to create a garment.
Cimmaron is dedicated to providing top quality fabrics and quality production. She has a working studio in Surrey and a factory in India. She also works with NGO’s in India to create work opportunities for women who live in villages (see the video interview with Cimmaron for the whole story below) to provide them with a skill and a source of income.
Customer service is key to Cimmaron and she is dedicated to creating a collaborative relationship with all her clients. She greets everyone with a smile and a warm hello when they enter her boutique. Fashion should always be fun, so whether you are just browsing or need a new outfit, go visit Cimmaron at Nyasa Couture and she will be happy to help you .
