Steven Page at the Surrey Arts Centre

Steven Page at the Surrey Arts Centre

Friday night Steven Page visited Surrey for a performance at the Surrey Arts Centre.  Together with Craig Northey, singer/songwriter and founding member of the Vancouver band Odds, it was an evening of music, laughs, and friendship.

Thanks to Andrew Delbaere, Director of Sales & Marketing with the Surrey Eagles, (Surrey’s Junior “A” Hockey Club) for providing us with an Eagles t-shirt to give Steven as a gift!
Many, many thanks indeed to Barb Wolfe, Angela Cachay and the staff at the Surrey Arts Centre for accommodating Surrey604.

Northey opened the first set with the poignant, “Old Mistakes”. During Northey’s second song, Page entered the stage playing the melodica. The energy rose, the audience clapped and we knew that we’d be entertained for the rest of the evening.

Northey and Page are not only collaborators, but they are friends who have known each other since 1993.  The amusing shtick from the duo between songs made it all the more enjoyable. Not only are these guys exponentially musically talented, but they are funny too!

There were many highlights and  musical moments to remember throughout the show. “The Alternative Girlfriend/Someone Who’s Cool” and “It’s All Been Done/It Falls Apart” mashups; Page’s powerful and moving vocals on “Manchild” and “New Shore” (co-written with Northey for Page’s album Page One (2010).  Page’s lamenting and soulful rendition of “What a Good Boy” was unforgettable.  The play between bravado and vulnerability that Page delivers so well draws you in and lifts you up every time. His voice filled the room and you could feel every distinctive emotion pouring from each song. During “Chorus Girl”, Page prompted the crowd to sing along. It was a true melodic moment with the audience. The encore performance of “Brian Wilson” gave us amazing guitar playing by both and a jolt of energy to end the night.

The most unforgettable moment of the night happened on stage.  During “Jane”, Page walked over to Northey, and the two played side by side. Two friends on stage, in sync, zoned into themselves and their music.  The music flowed between them and amongst us.  It was electric. I wish I could have taken a photo of Page and Northey to preserve the connection we witnessed in that instant.

It was a pleasure to have Steven Page in our city for the first time.  During the concert, Northey gave a shout out to the Central City Brewing Company and complimented the Red Racer.  Page and Northey also gave respects to the Surrey Arts Centre for hosting and for the beautiful venue. After the concert as the crowd mingled in the lobby, there was definitely a good buzz about Page and the music.  The crowd was diverse and friendly, which is a compliment to the fans that came out to support Steven Page in Surrey.

Steven Page is currently on a Western Canada acoustic tour with Craig Northey.
