Some people know Jillian Harris as the girl who tried to find love through a reality TV show. We know her as Jillian Harris, a proud Canadian woman from Peace River, Alberta who loves the smell of campfire, has a passion for design and revels in the comforts of home.
I had a chance to sit down with Jillian after her appearance at Live at Wave. There are many young women who admire Jillian’s successes and curious to know how this small-town girl has been able to make great strides in her career and live a fulfilling life.
Jillian’s inspirations began from her mother who ran an antique shop and instilled the importance of the meaning and character attached to the special things that make up a home. This notion is apparent in Jillian’s design style of mixing the old with the new in a meaningful way.
In life we may have a mentor or someone who inspires us, takes us under their wing and teaches us something valuable about life that becomes a part of who we are. Jillian spoke candidly about Scott Morison, restauranteur and co-founder of the Cactus Club Café chain. Scott offered her a job as a designer when Jillian was a waitress at Cactus Club years ago. He took her under his wing, and taught her about business, design and work ethic. However, this relationship was not without its growing pains as Jillian did not always appreciate Scott’s lessons on the realities of the business. Jillian carried those invaluable experiences with her and applied them in creating a business of her own. A great example of how opportunity creates possibilities.
How does Jillian maintain a design business, TV show commitments, coast to coast travel, and still have time for home? Not to mention the projects that she is hoping to accomplish in the future (see our video for more!). It’s balance – Jillian says, “work hard, play hard…. and be honorable”. She also makes time to stay healthy and to help others through volunteer work. Good advice for everyone out there at every stage of life who want to enjoy the dream to the fullest.
