Our Outstanding Women: Shakti Awards 2012

The Shakti Awards welcomed a packed house Saturday evening at the Bollywood Banquet Hall. The purpose of this annual event is to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of everyday women in our community and commemorate International Women’s Day.

“The Shakti Awards night is an annual dinner gala where awards are presented to women who have made outstanding contributions and accomplishments in the community.

Shakti means strength in several Indian languages and personifies the essence of women who take on several roles in their lives with grace, courage and enduring strength. Shakti awards are given to women in the community who have exemplified strength in each of the 5 award categories.

The award recipients are as follows:

  • Honorary award, public service – Anu Pala
  • Honorary award, business and entrepreneur – Madhuri Anand
  • Academic achievement – Gurkiran Maan
  • Business and Entrepreneur – Rammen Sagu
  • Public service – Caroline McGllivray
  • Artistic achievement – Farah Hasan
  • Sports achievement – Pretty Verma

Premier Christy Clark’s address was delivered by MLA Stephanie Cadieaux. Long time supporters MLAs Dave Hayer and Sue Hammell attended.

A very moving key note speech was given by Kamal Dhillon, author of Black and Blue Saree.

Community partners: Diversecity, Beauty Night, ISS, Justice Education Society also participated. A variety of entertainers added revelry to the evening.
