Friday night at the Rio Theatre, a line up of excited fans and the anticipation of a great night of music. Surrey’s own, Good for Grapes kicked off their Summer Tour 2012 with local opening acts Derrival and Young Pacific.
Good for Grapes are Surrey residents: Daniel McBurnie, Graham Gomez, Alexa Unwin, Robert Hardie, Sean MacKeigan, Blair Hansen and Jesse Brook. This group of high school friends have garnered attention through their win on Roger’s Battle of the Bands and Supernova’s Band on the Run to the UK . They have steadily built up their fan base by playing venues in Surrey, Vancouver and Squamish and being a part of events such as Party for the Planet.
As the Surrey604 crew entered the theatre, we were greeted by a couple of the band members. They were hospitable, a little overwhelmed and excited – they took care of business, performed sound checks, and greeted friends and family. It was great to be a part of such a positive night for this group of young and talented musicians.
The band talked to us backstage on a small dimly lit staircase. It was a great moment to be surrounded by these talented people on the verge of an incredible journey. It’s hard to believe that the group has only been together as a band for less than two years. When they are on stage it is clear that they are connected to each other through the love of music. Their sound may be described as ‘folk alternative’, however their style is unique– it’s refreshing, thoughtful and full of energy.
The evening brought young and older fans together at the all ages show. Most of the audience stood in front of the stage for the whole concert, enjoying the energy and the music. There were some great musical moments during the show – Good for Grapes knows how to transfer their energy from the music to the audience. As the energy rose, the audience took in the boundless energy on stage from what has become known as the signature ‘folk stomp’. The personalities and passion that these individuals have is a sight to see on stage. Shooting the concert with a zoom lens, I felt that I had an unique perspective catching an intimate glimpse of each individual’s energy immersed in the music.
If you missed them, Good for Grapes will be back in Vancouver and Surrey in July. Check their Facebook page for updates and concert information. We will be following them throughout the summer and wish them the best of luck on their Summer 2012 Tour. We’re proud to have such a talented band representing Surrey!
