Our friends at Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) want you to have an outdoor musical theatre experience surrounded by the beauty of Stanley Park. This is your chance to win and check out Titanic: A New Musical and the Music Man at the Malkin Bowl this summer.
Daman and I recently went to the TUTS production of the legendary Broadway show, The Music Man. It was our first TUTS experience.
From the moment we arrived the TUTS team of volunteers welcomed us with big smiles. Everyone was in good spirits. There were a variety of snacks available – we noticed a lady enjoying her Crackerjack! They even have a bar where you can pre-order your glass of wine or beer. We opted for our trusty coffees.

We were lucky with the beautiful weather that evening. The production was amazing and we were both impressed with the quality of the sound and tech. Sounds nerdy, but a big plus when it comes to outdoor theatre. The costume design was beautiful – everyone looked gorgeous and the costumes were complimentary to the characters.
Stanley Park was the perfect backdrop and it was beautiful to watch the sun setting in the park as we enjoyed the story, music and the laughs. It gets chilly in the park as the sun sets, so do bring something to keep you warm. Many people brought blankets or sweaters/hoodies to keep cozy.
The Music Man is a classic and the songs were uplifting – we were both singing the infectious tunes as we walked to the Skytrain on our way home. Daren Herbert was charming and full of energy as Harold Hill, the con man who stops in at River City intending to swindle the citizens by promising to create a marching band. Herbert has a grand voice and played a flawless Harold Hill. Aiden Wessels was endearing as Winthrop, the introverted boy with a lisp who is befriended by Hill.
It was a perfect night out and great to see an all- ages audience enjoying musical theatre together. I love musical theatre so this was a big treat for me as I hadn’t seen a show in quite some time. The Cast worked extremely well together and certainly lived up to my expectations. We both enjoyed it all the way through. Thank you to Director Sarah Rodgers, Choreographer Dayna Tekatch, and Musical Director Christopher King.
If you have never experienced musical theatre (or theatre in the park), I urge you to make an evening of it and support TUTS. TUTS is a non-profit society that first began producing musical theatre in 1940 and after many changes over the years we are fortunate to still have TUTS. They give us great productions while supporting and showcasing great talent.
