Gurdarshan “Saint Lion” Mangat continues MMA dominance at BFL37

Gurdarshan “Saint Lion” Mangat earned his nickname at BFL37 at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam tonight. Mangat was revered by the fans in attendance, like a saint typically would be, and like a lion Mangat stalked his opponent Damen Wood throughout the entire five minute first round before pouncing on his opponent like a lion on its prey in the second and third rounds of the fight.

Watching Mangat fight, there were obvious similarities in his fighting style and that of legendary UFC fighter Georges St. Pierre, which shouldn’t be surpising considering the two train together at TriStar Gym in Montreal. Like St. Pierre, Mangat relied heavily on his footwork and submission holds to take control of the fight and could also go to the ground and pound style when it was called for. Mangat was able to dominate Wood, only allowing him to get a small flurry offence in the last 30 seconds of the fight before ultimately taking the fight by unanimous decision.

Although Mangat hasn’t been noticed by a major MMA promotion yet, the fans in attendance at the Hard Rock Casino certainly took notice with chants of “Gary, Gary, Gary,” ringing out throughout the building when the horn sounded to end the fight. It can only be a matter of time before a major MMA promotion follows suit.
