The Surrey Eagles won their first game of the season tonight, a 4-1 victory over the Prince George Spruce Kings. Darius Davidson led the team with two goals while his brother Daniel was between the pipes and made 41 saves on 42 shots.
The Spruce Kings opened the scoring early in the first period with Matthew Hermary sitting in the penalty box for a tripping penalty taken 12 seconds earlier. It looked like the Eagles might be in for another long night as they lacked a real sense of urgency in the first period, although they controlled the play for most of the first period.
The 2nd period featured more of the same from the Eagles, as they continued to send man after man to the penalty box. In the past three games, the Eagles PK was one of the few bright spots, and tonight their were plenty of bright spots, but the PK shone brightest. With Gary Dhaliwal serving a double minor for high-sticking, Paul McAvoy broke through with help from Donovan Ott and Kodi Schwarz on a 3 on 1 to tie things up for the Eagles.
The third period was all Eagles as they completely took control of the game. Matthew Hermary redeemed himself after his penalty led to a goal with a goal of his own to put the Eagles ahead 2-1. Shortly after that, Darius Davidson added an insurance goal before putting the icing on the cake with an empty netter late in the third.
Perhaps the most interesting storyline from this game is the goaltending. Justin Laforest has not played up to expectations, so the net was given to Daniel Davidson tonight and he was able to take the torch and run with it. Davidson was absolutely spectacular tonight, making plenty of highlight reel saves so it will be interesting to see how Blaine Neufeld handles the goaltending situation heading in to the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack. Each goalie should get at least one game in the showcase, but it remains to be seen who will be the Eagles starting goalie when they return to the South Surrey Arena on October 4th when the Merritt Centennials come to town. That should be the first chance for Eagles fans to see the team at full strength as both Ludvig Adamsen and Kyle Star are expected to make their Eagles debuts at the Showcase.
