Exhibition Tour at Surrey Art Gallery

October 14, 7:30−9pm

In one of the Gallery’s most ambitious salon-style exhibitions, Views from the Southbank III: Information, Objects, Mappings presents a feast for your eyes from floor to ceiling. With so many artworks and styles, the Surrey Art Gallery’s exhibition tour on Wednesday, October 14 from 7:30 to 9:30pm is a must-attend event. Get behind-the-scenes stories about the artwork on display in a casual and informative tour led by Jordan Strom, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections. The event is free.

Views from the Southbank III: Information, Objects, Mappings is the final installment of a three-part exhibition series that celebrates art from and about Surrey throughout 2015 for the Gallery’s 40th anniversary. Two dozen local artists are featured in this show that emphasizes how we receive and map information in our digital age. Among the stories, you’ll hear about Debbie Tuepah’s eye-catching sculpture made out of large drips of paint, “Mother Tongue” that represents language statistics in Surrey. You’ll see a triad of oil paintings by Ben Reeves who threw darts at a map of Surrey and then drove to these locations to paint what he saw. And you most certainly have to try out Sandee Moore’s video game, “Labyrinth: Surrey Condos Edition” played with your feet like Dance Dance Revolution yet less about dance and more about walking the empty and disorienting streets of newly planned suburbs, looking to combat boredom and achieve self-discovery.

In addition to these background stories, Strom will talk about how and why the artworks on display were chosen for the exhibition, hear about different artistic techniques, and discuss ideas explored in the exhibition. Participants will enjoy this friendly introduction to the fascinating world of contemporary art and how it reflects the world around us. Both regular tour participants and first-time gallery visitors are encouraged to ask questions and share their responses to the artworks.
