Eco-friendly jewelry gives back

Published

on

Summertime and the livin’ is easy, right? During the warm weather, comfort and coolness are key when getting dressed. Chances are, you’ve been finding yourself wearing breezy cotton dresses, rompers, or jean shorts and simple tank tops on a daily basis. While these outfits are certainly practical when considering the elements outside, they can quickly start to feel rather uninspiring and downright blah. Take your look up a notch with the right accessories; jewelry, in particular.

Making a true style statement isn’t always easy, but statement necklaces from Color By Amber are all you need to stand out.

This Soul Necklace – Vibrante, is made by artisans in Mexico, with 10% of net proceeds directly benefitting the Full Circle Program.

With the concept of creating gorgeous materials from our natural world and encapsulating them in stunning ecoresin, each piece of Amber is a beautiful expression of style, sustainability, and social responsibility. This jewelry collection, promoted by Fraser Valley stylist Tracy Reid, is an eco-friendly company that gives back to communities and empowers women around the world by creating and selling on trend jewelry.

Particularly, their Full Circle Program which focuses on sustaining a better life and a better future for their artisans, allows new opportunities, skills and a better living environment for their entire communities.

Since Nepal’s two devastating earthquakes last spring, more than 70 women have completed vocational training programs so they can access more job opportunities, many of the artisans’ children have received funding for education and a new wastewater treatment system has brought fresh water. And as they continue rebuilding damaged homes, these women go on to prove their resilience and strength of spirit yet again, all while still handcrafting interlayers with care.

The Top 4 Rolex Watches Every Discerning Collector Needs

Published

on

Rolex is one of the largest brands of watch in the world. In fact, evidence has shown that Rolex watches are bigger and more popular than Longines, Omega and Cartier watches combined. Not only do Rolex watches look great, but they’re also a great investment. In fact, Rolex watches can double in price in just one year. If you don’t believe us, go into a watch shop and look at the price of a Rolex, then check out the price tag of the same model of watch from the previous year. There’s a good chance that the watch was half the price last year than it is now. So, if you’re buying a watch as an investment, then a Rolex is a brilliant option for you.

Whether you’re a discerning collector or you’re simply looking for an investment piece of jewellery, Rolex is the way to go. From gold Rolexes to the Submariner, here are some of the best and most popular Rolex watches every discerning collector needs in 2020:

1. The Rolex Milgauss

Magnetic watches from sites like CHRONEXT have become an extremely popular choice in the UK in 2020, but no-one makes them better than Rolex. You can find their whole range via CHRONEXT, but the Rolex Milgauss in particular is an exceptionally robust magnetic wristwatch.

It was developed with researchers, scientists and engineers in mind. The Milgauss is one of the most revolutionary watches ever developed. Rolex created this watch to be able to withstand strong electromagnetic fields. While you may not be working in an environment that has strong electromagnetic fields, you can be sure that this watch is one of the most durable watches ever produced.

Not only is this amazing watch robust and durable, but it is also elegant and functional. It was designed to be worn in busy work environments, in the great outdoors and everywhere in between. The versatile nature of this watch makes it one of the most popular watches available on the market today.

If you want a watch that increases in value, then the Rolex Milgauss is a brilliant choice for you. Thanks to the rare features it has and highest quality metals used in the building of the product, this watch is a brilliant investment piece. The Rolex Milgauss is known for its distinctive character and design, meaning that it’s not only scientists and researchers that want it, but collectors too.

2. The Rolex Daytona

The Rolex Daytona was first introduced in 1963. It was marketed as a timing instrument for professional race-car drivers. Even though this watch was released over 50 years ago, the Rolex Daytona is still one of the most popular Rolex watches available to purchase today. This is mainly thanks to its impressive accuracy.

The Rolex Daytona Ref. 116500 is a more up to date version of the Rolex Daytona and was introduced in 2016. The Rolex Daytona Ref. 116500 was the first ever model to be built with a Cerachrom bezel (a ceramic material that resists ultraviolet rays and scratches).

Just like the Rolex Milgauss, this watch is a brilliant option for people wanting an investment piece of jewellery. Rolex Daytona watches that were purchased in the 1970s are currently selling for anywhere between £90,000 and £120,000, and the Rolex Daytona that was released in 2016 is already commanding prices of anywhere up to £26,000.

3. The Rolex Datejust

The Rolex Datejust is often known as the quintessential Rolex watch. The Datejust was first introduced by the company in 1945. This was the first wristwatch to ever contain a date complication. However, a few years after its release, Rolex updated the watch once again.

They chose to include a “Cyclops” magnifier in the design. This feature is now included on many of today’s Rolexes. The Cyclops can be used to magnify the date by over two and a half times. The fluted bezel, the elegant dial and the gold and steel fusion on this amazing watch have never been out of style. The simple design and warm elegance of the Datejust has never gone out of fashion with collectors around the world.

4. The Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is the current gold standard of diver’s watches. It was first introduced as an essential dive tool  in 1953. To the inexperienced collector, the Rolex Submariner may look a bit plain, but it’s actually a high-performing piece of technology.

The Submariner looks great as a dress watch and can perform perfectly as an adventure watch too. This watch can be purchased with or without the date, but the no-date version of this watch is meant to be the most popular type of Rolex on the market today.

The popularity of the Rolex brand can’t be understated. In fact, rumour has it that this brand would be able to survive with all stores and staff in place even if it didn’t sell another watch for another ten years. Rolex watches are likely to continue to increase in popularity over the next few years. Which one is your favourite?

LA-based clothing collection from Vancouver native launches first full-piece collection.

Vancouver B.C.: LA-based athleisure line, Friends with Animals, launched its first full-piece collection today, featuring 90s-inspired items with whimsical prints and graphics, inspired by Vancouver’s mountainous landscape and coastline.

Tavia Bonetti, Founder, Friends with Animals

Vancouver native, Tavia Bonetti, is the brainchild and Founder of Friends with Animals. After high school, Tavia left Vancouver to pursue a career in modelling. Tavia envisioned channelling her knowledge of the modelling industry and passion for textiles into a clothing line — creating merriment between the outdoors and her sense of fashion. Taking inspiration from her hometown of Vancouver, Tavia created the outdoor athleisure line, lovingly dubbing it Friends with Animals — a true reflection of herself. “It’s me and everything I love,” says Tavia. “It’s an outlet to express what makes me happy through my clothes and style.”

Engagement Ring Traditions Around the World

Published

on

Nowadays we simply cannot imagine a proposal without its majesty, the engagement ring, right? Every time a girl posts a picture on her Instagram profile showing off that piece of bling on her finger we know that she said yes to the one she loves. Although we all know what that ring represents, there are not a lot of people who know about the origin of the engagement ring. It is believed that the first rings that were exchanged as symbols of love and fidelity were used in ancient Egypt, where circles were symbols of eternity.

Those rings were made out of braided reeds and were worn on the left hand. Engagement ring traditions popular in western culture mimic this ancient tradition. A man buys a ring, and when the time is right he gets down on one knee and pops the question. In western culture a guy never receives the ring, he is always the one who gives it. However, this is not the case in other parts of the world. There, things are done a little bit differently, so read the following and maybe you will find something you wish to include in your own engagement.

Chile

If you are a man and you think that it isn’t fair that only women receive jewelry, you should live in Chile, where it is custom that both the men and women receive engagement rings. Also, they wear them on their right hand and move them to their left hand when they get wed. This gesture symbolizes the transition from engagement to marriage.

France

When someone mentions an engagement ring, we immediately picture a ring with a huge diamond. However, in some countries such as France, that shiny stone doesn’t have to be a diamond. Other gemstones can also be seen on engagement rings, such as rubies, emeralds, and sapphire. Just visit MoonMagic.com and you will find plenty of alternatives to the traditional diamond ring.

Kenya

In some countries, the ring doesn’t play an important role in the whole engagement process at all. Actually, couples in Kenya exchange elaborate jewelry for their engagement instead of rings. The material that is used to make the jewelry depends on the region where they live.

Hindu Cultures

Although in some Hindu cultures women wear western-style engagement rings, there are those cultures where the ring is worn on a finger, but not the one you think! These ladies wear a toe ring that is called “Bichiya” and it supposedly presses on nerves that are connected to the reproductive system.

Indian Cultures

If you travel to India and you see a woman wearing bangle bracelets made of glass, gold, iron, and other metals, it means she is engaged. These bracelets symbolize good fortune and prosperity and on her wedding day, the bride will be adorned with other pieces of jewelry as well, such as necklaces, rings, nose rings, and belts.

So you see, there are so many different engagement traditions around the world, and in a lot of them an actual ring doesn’t have any kind of role. Would you consider an engagement without this universal symbol of love and commitment?

South Asian Fashion Week (Postponed)

Published

UPDATE – MARCH 13, 2020
Statement from South Asian Fashion Week:

“We have been diligently observing the developments in media, as well as monitoring the updates provided by Provincial and Coastal Health on the status of COVID-19 in BC.

As the producers of South Asian Fashion Week we have carefully taken into consideration the health and safety of our designers, models, guests, and SAFW team. The difficult decision to postpone this year’s fashion week due to the coronavirus pandemic is extremely devastating, but it is the right thing to do in the interest of everyone in our community.

The situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve rapidly and we urge everyone to follow guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials.

Stay tuned for new South Asian Fashion Week 2020 dates.

Those who have tickets to the events may use them when the event is rescheduled.”

VANCOUVER, BC – (March 2020) – South Asian Fashion Week (SAFW) is back for its third year from March 27 to 29 with a new venue – the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. SAFW is a creative platform for fashion, beauty and design. This year, there is an amazing lineup of both local and international South Asian fashion designers who will showcase their work all in one space, over a three-day weekend. There is no fashion event quite like it. The program includes over 20 runway shows, unique designs and unforgettable art installations.

Co-founders Cindy Khella and Farah Hasan have come together with Hartej Dhanda to host an event that celebrates and recognizes South Asian designers’ success locally and internationally. The third annual SAFW features an expanded range of designers, stylists, models, artists and photographers.

The elite fashion event will see 700 anticipated guests and more than 100 models working in 10 fashion shows on both the Saturday and Sunday. On Friday March 27, the three-day event kicks off with a Dinner Gala which will include a fashion show featuring top Indian designer Neeta Lulla.

Neeta Lulla is a multiple National Film Award winning Indian costume designer and fashion stylist who has worked on over 300 films. Her name became inseparably associated with Bollywood after actresses Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit wore her costumes in Devdas (2002 Hindi film), as well as another trend-setting Bollywood film – Jodha Akbar.

“Neeta Lulla has designed for Shilpa Shetty, Aishwarya Rai, Sridevi, Juhi Chawla, Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan among the most notable celebrities,” says co-founder Cindy Khella. “At SAFW this year, our goal is to showcase the versatility of South Asian Fashion not only from Vancouver, but from all around the world as well.”

“After last year’s success of showcasing the Dynamic Designs of International Designer Falguni Shane Peacock for first time ever in Canada, we wanted to build on that and bring some more of the most popular award-winning designers from Bollywood that have never presented their fashion lines in Canada.”

Along with Neeta Lulla, SAFW will be showcasing renowned international designers such as Monisha Jaising, who is one of the pioneers of the Indian fashion industry and the popular Shweta Bachan in Vancouver.

“This year we are focusing on diversity and being all inclusive. South Asian fashion is becoming more mainstream,” Farah Hasan says. “More than 400 models applied to work the runway in SAFW and 120 were selected. Most are from Canada, but some models are from as far away as Myanmar, Mexico and New York City.”

Runway shows on Saturday, March 27th and Sunday, March 28th, will feature opulent creations by local and international South Asian designers and brands. Guests can also enjoy the SAFW Showroom, featuring curated local, independent clothing, jewelry and beauty brands that will be available for purchase on site.

As part of SAFW’s mandate of showcasing all upcoming and local creatives, they have curated a space within Vancouver to bring together a variety of artists, poets, speakers, and visionaries to share their work and discuss high-interest fashion topics with phenomenal panelists. This Art Exhibit and Panel discussion is being held on March 20, 2020 at Lipont Place (4211 No. 3 Rd, Richmond, BC) as a prelude to the South Asian Fashion week.

South Asian Fashion Week (SAFW) celebrates the talent, art and craftsmanship of South Asian fashion designers on the runway. Produced by Cindy Khella, Farah Hasan, and Hartej Dhanda, the event is a creative platform that inspires and defines upcoming South Asian fashion trends in contemporary womenswear, menswear and accessories.
