Bollywood Under the Stars Returns- Vancouver’s Only Annual Bollywood Movie Screening
Now in its 9th year, the South Asian Family Association is pleased to announce the continuation of its popular Bollywood Under the Stars event, Vancouver’s only annual free outdoor Bollywood movie screening. The society will be screening the 1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), with English subtitles on Saturday, August 20th at Unwin Park in Surrey. After an enormously successful screening of DDLJ in 2009 in Stanley Park, the society has decided to bring it back as the film just celebrated its 20th anniversary.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge encapsulates the essence of family importance with the notion of eternal love. The movie provides a whirlwind of emotions, a roller coaster of love, tears, happiness and a sense of togetherness. Featuring on-screen power-couple Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, whose chemistry speaks through the screen; the beloved Amrish Puri; the iconic scenery of Switzerland that Yash Chopra himself popularized in Indian Cinema, and an unforgettable soundtrack – DDLJ is packed with everything that makes a Bollywood cult classic.
The popularity of this movie within India and worldwide is beyond reproach and it broke all the records of its time. To this day it is the longest running uninterrupted run in Indian Cinema and continues to play in the Maratha Mandar Theatre in Mumbai. In 1995 Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge earned $32 million in India and about $4 million overseas becoming the highest grossing Bollywood movie of the decade. It also won over 10 Filmfare awards including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Film, Best Screenplay and Best Music amongst others.
The plot follows Raj – a rich, carefree, happy-go-lucky second generation NRI (non-resident Indian) and Simran – the daughter of Chaudry Baldev Singh, who in spite of being an NRI is very strict about adherence to Indian values. The two meet on a month long Eurotrip, and what started off as pranks, fun and games, ends in love. By the time the two realize their true feelings, it is too late as Simran has left for India to be married to her childhood fiancé. Raj travels to India to claim his ladylove and makes attempts to impress her whole family. What happens next, you’ll have to watch to find out!
