A Futuristic Surrey Featured in Local Filmmakers’ STORYHIVE Pitch — Support Them With Your Vote Now!

Telus Storyhive is a funding contest held by Telus that helps aspiring filmmakers in Alberta & British Columbia get funding for any film related projects they create. This includes movies, music videos and web series. $10,000 is awarded to those who show they can grab votes, and connect with an audience, while also having a diverse and strong team.

The year is 2037. LUX-ME is a sci-romantic comedy story which takes place in Metro Vancouver and follows two South Asians, Aru and Noori, who both download the LUX-ME app which pulls them into a world of augmented reality. In an identity obsessed society, this app allows users to display their stats (Gender, Relationship Status, Interests, and Compatibility) overhead, which allows whoever downloads the app to publicly see these stats. In a new generation of South Asians living in North America, Aru and Noori must now try to balance their life with the “modern” times, family, and still try to hold whatever culture is left from the previous generation. This in turn creates a new sub-culture.

Their parents, Millennials, must teach their children of the Alpha Generation about the culture from the previous lifetimes. Our show is about navigating culture, identity, and technology all in one. It represents our innately human desires for social acceptance.

Multicultural advocacy- Metro Vancouver is one of Canada’s growing hubs for multiculturalism. That’s why Lux-Me uses Metro Vancouver’s diverse communities & culture as the backdrop for its narrative. For a web series to take place in a multicultural city, representation of minority communities is key. Minorities are soon to be the majority, so why aren’t we seeing more diverse individuals on screen? Lux-Me will change this, without forcing diversity. It will make fair representation the norm. Lux me represents the south Asian, the non binary, & lgbtq communities, along with other marginalized groups.

Bi-cultural Identity representation – We are seeing the formation of new subcultures and individuals who have formed fusion bicultural identities (For example, a harmonious balance between Canadian and Chinese or Canadian and Iranian culture). Our show provides representation for these communities of bicultural individuals who may not relate entirely to Bollywood or Korean cinema, or to Eurocentric Hollywood alone.

Community Relevance – Our show demonstrates how the landscape, skyline and businesses of Metro Vancouver are going to evolve in the near future to fit community values for efficiency improving digitization, environmentally friendly consumerism and minimalist yet practical urban aesthetics. We will be showcasing iconic Metro Vancouver locations and highlighting local businesses in order to keep the focus of the series Vancouver based.

Metro Vancouver’s Green Future – Metro Vancouver has consistently been ranked as Canada’s greenest place to live. Lux-Me will build on the projected growth of environmentalism in Metro Vancouver and showcase how future generations of citizens may be living in a zero carbon, zero waste society. Within the show, we will incorporate forecasted trends of autonomous electric and shared vehicles, biking, organic diets, the growth of tech companies, and more. We believe this city will soon be an idealistic metropolis and by producing a show like this, it will only encourage communities to create this earth-conscious utopia.
