New President and CEO appointed for Surrey City Development Corporation

The Board of the Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC) has announced the appointment of Michael Heeney, Architect AIBC, FRAIC, RI(BC) as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 11, 2017.

Michael comes to SCDC with many years of city building experience throughout North America. For the past 28 years, Michael has been the Managing Principal of Bing Thom Architects where he was instrumental in the growth and success of that organization and led many complex and transformative projects including the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC, the Central City project in Surrey, BC, Arena Stage in Washington DC and Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas.

“We are delighted that Michael will be joining SCDC and we look forward to him bringing his vision to build on the strengths and successes of SCDC as it enters its second decade,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “Through his work with Bing Thom Architects, Michael has been involved in several visionary projects in Surrey, including our iconic City Centre Library, the Guildford Aquatic Centre, and the new SFU Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering building.

With a long-term and deep commitment to Surrey, Michael has been instrumental in bringing together a myriad of public and private stakeholders to create and execute Surrey Central City. Subsequent projects in Surrey include the Surrey City Centre Plan update, the City Centre Library, the Guildford Aquatic Centre, the SFU Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering (SE3P) and various feasibility studies.

SCDC is a for-profit real estate development company incorporated in 2007 and owned by the City of Surrey to assist in realizing and advancing the transformation of Surrey into a more modern, vibrant, sustainable and complete community. Through its real estate development activities, SCDC enables the City to achieve strategic community objectives by optimizing the use and value of city-owned lands and civic facilities and encouraging high quality private-sector development in Surrey.

The SCDC Board would like to recognize the tremendous contributions of SCDC’s CFO, Emily Taylor, who agreed to be Interim President & CEO and to thank her for so capably overseeing SCDC during this transition period.

Michael Heeney Architect AIBC, FRAIC, RI(BC) A nationally and internationally recognized city builder, architect and planner with over 25 years guiding organizations and complex projects.  Direct organizational and board leadership experience with an emphasis on strategy development, operations, business development, contracts and legal and human resources management. Led and managed  the firm of Bing Thom Architects, , an innovative architectural office with 35-50 staff in three locations world-wide and recipient of many international, national and provincial awards.  With $1B (construction value) in projects currently underway, clients include highly successful land developers in Canada and the US, some of Canada’s largest municipalities, various government agencies in Canada, the US and Asia, and numerous high-profile cultural institutions worldwide, universities in Canada, US and Asia. With a long-term and deep commitment to Surrey, initially brought together a myriad of public and private stakeholders to create and execute Surrey Central City. Subsequent projects in Surrey include the Surrey City Centre Plan update, the City Centre Library, the Guildford Aquatic Centre, the SFU Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering (SE3P) and various feasibility studies. Completed Urban Land Economics program. Qualified member of Real Estate Institutes of British Columbia and Canada. Holds a Bachelor of Architecture from UBC and Bachelor of Arts from UofT. Awarded designation of Fellow of the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada in 2011 for excellence in contributions to architecture and community building in Canada.
