5 Fun Things You Can Do in Surrey This Fall

5 Fun Things You Can Do in Surrey This Fall

With over 1,000 people moving here each month, Surrey is one of the liveliest and fastest-growing cities in Metro Vancouver. Its natural beauty, flourishing culinary scene and cutting-edge recreational facilities make it a city just waiting to be discovered. This diverse community, rich with arts, culture, history, and heritage is also home to some of Canada’s largest and most vibrant festivals.

Surrey embodies a unique fusion of urban and rural, embracing both our buzzing urban centres and stunning natural landscapes. It is shocking just how vast the city is, and I am constantly making new discoveries. Just this week, I was introduced to five new places in Surrey that I have never experienced before. If you’re looking for something fun to do this fall, you need to visit them!

1. Experience the Rondriso Farms Pumpkin Patch & Hayride

Rondriso raises 25 cows per year, all on their farm.

Rondriso raises 25 cows per year, all on their farm.

The Tamis family has been farming in Surrey since 1958. They own and operate Rondriso Farms along with a general store, and pumpkin patch. This small-scale farm grows a wide range of crops to maintain the integrity of their land and the food they grow. They sell produce at their General Store and local farmers markets.

Rondriso also offers a Localicious Produce Box program. They raise chickens and Simmental cattle. Every October 1st, Rondriso Farms Pumpkin Patch opens for the season with some of the biggest, best-quality pumpkins around! You can visit their livestock, and best of all, take a hayride with their dog through the pumpkin fields.

2. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at Sugar Patisserie

Owner and Pastry chef, Caitlin Mayo, opened Sugar Patisserie in September 2010. Being born and raised in the Langley/Cloverdale area, Caitlin wanted to bring the downtown pastry shop to the growing community that she calls home.

The staff at Sugar Patisserie strive to make the best desserts and cakes possible. Caitlin’s passion for the craft encourages her to push beyond the workings of a conventional bakery by using local produce (including pumpkins, eggs, carrots and zucchini from Rondriso Farms) and hand made jam in her baking.

3. Grab a Pint at Hawthorne Beer Market

Cloverdale is a funky community rivalling Vancouver’s Main Street with specialty boutiques and hipster style. Hawthorne Beer Market and Bistro exemplifies this. With its industrial vintage decor, including a raised party room with a roaring fireplace, Hawthorne serves casual fine food with an enormous selection of craft beer. They have 17 rotating taps, and over 80 craft and import bottles.

Watch one of their barkeeps whip up a fresh batch of their specialty, steamed mussels right in front of you. If mussels and beer aren’t your thing, they’ve got many classics including gourmet pizza, pastas and burgers, a great selection of meats and seafoods to pair with a wicked wine list. Best of all, the place is family friendly, so you can bring your kids!

I’m told Hawthorne takes its name from a founding father of Cloverdale. Some guy back in the 1800s whom I believe has also given his name to some parks and squares around Surrey. I tried searching online to learn more about him but found nothing. If you have any info on this dude, please send it my way.

4. Dine Inside a Vintage Bank Vault

Just a short walk from Hawthorne and under the same ownership, is Vault Restaurant, a longtime Surrey favourite. It offers an upscale casual dining experience and features an old bank vault converted into a dining room.

The Vault features Pacific Northwest cuisine, an award-winning wine list, live music, and delicious martinis. Note that both Hawthorne and Vault Restaurant also get much of their fresh produce from Rondriso Farms, including some of the most flavourful cooked carrots you’ve ever tasted.

5. Pee Your Pants at Potter’s House of Horrors

One of the Lower Mainland’s biggest and best-rated haunted houses, Potter’s House of Horrors is open for the season from October 6th through 31st with two ultra-scary haunted houses. Every fall, Potter’s staff converts the grounds from an enjoyable, plant-filled garden centre into a maze of terror with all the latest animatronics, digital sounds, high-tech scares and trained actors to put on a fun and scary event that sends chills down the spines of all those who enter.

Entering season 15 of its horrifically awesome event, the crew at Potter’s is more enthusiastic than ever to try and scare the hell out of you! Got little ones? No worries! Potter’s Li’l Haunters attraction is geared towards kids 12 and under. Partial proceeds go to Critter Care Wildlife Society.

Last year over 300 people ran screaming out of the exits before finishing their tour!

Potter’s House of Horrors is dedicated to giving patrons a frighteningly creepy and monstrously enjoyable time this Halloween season. The place was even booming on a Wednesday night. As a horror fan, I was incredibly impressed with some of the gruesome scenes, situations and surprises they presented. This is the real deal. In fact, last year over 300 people ran screaming out of the exits before finishing their tour! Let me know if you have the guts to try the Coffin Ride, which simulates what it’s like to be buried in a coffin — not for the claustrophobic. Honestly, I avoided that one.
