Moving Forward Family Services started in 2016 and caters to community members all across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. It’s a non-profit and registered charitable organization that provides counselling services to everyone regardless of their income level. There are many options available for individual, couples and family counselling either at a set hourly rate or free/pay what you can, so that nobody is denied the help they deserve. Support from the community through the Nov 2nd Fundraiser will allow MFFS to expand their services, bring on more counsellors and ultimately help more people. More specifically, funds will be used to expand services to children through Cyndi’s Centre for Child Education, Counselling and Support, named after Gary’s late spouse, Cyndi Thandi, a teacher in Surrey who was passionate in working with vulnerable children and their families.
“There are many great agencies doing great work, yet many of our most vulnerable children, youth, adults, seniors, families and extended families are suffering and falling through gaps in service,” Gary, who was recently honoured as one of the 150 Leading Canadians for Mental Health by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), advises. “We are committed to helping those who are falling through the gaps, as well as working with like-minded partners in collaborative efforts to address those gaps. No one needed help should be turned away, that is our vision. Emotionally healthy children and families means healthier, stronger communities.”
Mental Health is a major concern as many community members suffer from a variety of disorders and don’t get the help they need until it’s too late. Common mental health issues include, depression, anxiety, paranoia, etc. Visiting a family doctor and being prescribed medication is one option however counselling and therapy sessions are also ways of coping and recovering from these disorders. This is usually a topic that is not widely discussed and often swept under the carpet with individuals and family members in full denial of any mental health issues ever existing. Moving Forward Family Services would like to bring these issues to the forefront, while bringing the community together for a fun-filled evening on November 2nd.
