From the world-renowned creative team behind the Mom’s the Word series comes the next chapter in their stories of family life and strife. Mom’s the Word 3: Nest ½ Empty is about adult children, marital breakdowns and dysfunctional bodies. Life doesn’t get any prettier for these moms who unabashedly share every embarrassing detail from their lives. Filled with a-ha moments, secrets, and humour that will make you blush and snort (or slap your knees and roar), this brand-new show—starring Jill Daum, Alison Kelly, Barbara Pollard, Deborah Williams, and Beatrice Zeilinger—is both hysterical and deeply touching.
And it’s not a play just for empty-nesters! In fact, if you pass up this hilarious and heart-tugging production, you’ll be missing out on a lot of valuable insight. It’s like the most important conversation you will ever have with your mom, if you have a REALLY open, honest, no-holds-barred relationship with her that involves colourful language. You get the inside scoop on what life will be like for you when the babies grow up and leave for college (or for countries you can’t pronounce, to do things that will permanently lodge your heart in your throat). Some of it sounds lovely – more time to do what you want – and some of it…just ain’t pretty.
The motherhood journey is full of emotion: anxiety, joy, worry, excitement, loneliness, happiness, fear, and satisfaction. The empty-nest stage is no exception. The heavier stories of medical diagnoses, divorce, identity, and loss were intricately woven throughout. In fact, the best way to describe the experience of watching one scene after the other is likening it to a roller coaster ride. One minute you’re laughing about an inventive way to use jacuzzi jets for female pleasure and the next you’re confronted with a degenerative disease. The audience response gave me the sense that many could relate to the bumpy road. There were nods and murmurs, quiet yes’s, and sighs. And those of us who have yet to travel this road were forced to evaluate the present: What am I doing to foster my relationship with my husband now? Am I soaking in enough moments with my children? What’s important to me as an individual? Am I living as authentically as I can?
It’s a special kind of production that can pull off entertainment and education, that creates a sense of community among mothers of all ages and stages. Find out what the fuss is all about and how this one team has managed to stay together for over two decades, garnering international acclaim and awards.
