WATL has a short but successful history. With roots in Canada, WATL was founded by Mario Zelaya just over a year ago and only had a handful of members. “Before I started WATL, I had a lot of entrepreneurs asking me for advice, guidance and how axe throwing worked. That’s when I saw the need for a global governing. A place where I could share knowledge, safety and define the rules for the sport.” Today, WATL has over 74 companies with 107 locations in 13 countries. One of those WATL member companies is Bad Axe Throwing, which opened up their doors in Surrey in the summer of 2016 and kicked off their leagues earlier this year.

Evan Walters, the Commissioner of the World Axe Throwing League states, “We have thousands of league members competing for the 64 spots available. It’s exciting to know that axe throwing is finally becoming a mainstream sport. It’s going to be the biggest event in axe throwing history.” The winner of the WATL Championship will win $5,000 USD, a trophy similar in size to the Stanley Cup that is paired with a custom axe.

There are currently a dozen axe throwing league members vying for the top spot at Bad Axe Throwing. A regional Surrey champion will be crowned and announced in mid-November where they will then participate for the WATL Championship on December 15th, on ESPN
