Surrey, BC: In just one day, members of Surrey’s South Asian community donated $543,000 during the 93.1 RED FM Gurpurab Radiothon, in support of cardiac care at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The community celebrated the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev ji through their donations, which will benefit the coronary care unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
As a radio partner to the Surrey Hospital Foundation, RED FM organized the annual Radiothon and donated the airtime; 100% of the funds raised are donated to the Surrey Hospital Foundation. Donors made contributions by phone, online or by visiting the RED FM studios from 7am – 9pm on November 23, 2018.
Although heart disease hits every family, the South Asian community is especially impacted. Research from Fraser Health shows those of South Asian descent are more likely develop heart disease than the rest of the population. They are also more likely to be impacted at an earlier age, and at greater risk of suffering a heart attack.
Since 2007, the RED FM Radiothons have raised more than $6.5 million for programs at Surrey Memorial Hospital that benefit thousands of people each year, including the Emergency Department, the Family Birthing Unit, the Stroke Unit and the Kidney Centre. This year’s funds will be used to purchase innovative equipment, support new technology for patient education, and enhance family centered care.
“Once again Surrey’s South Asian community has shown their tremendous generosity. We are grateful to the RED FM team and listeners for your dedication and support of Surrey Memorial Hospital,” says Jane Adams, President & CEO of the Surrey Hospital Foundation.
“Hundreds of volunteers helped make this a success, whether they were staffing the phones or preparing traditional delicacies for those stopping by. On behalf of the coronary care unit, and the thousands who will be impacted by your gifts, thank you.”
As the 2017 & 2018 Gurpurab Radiothons raised a combined total of over $1 million, the coronary care unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital will be renamed the Sarbat Coronary Care Unit. Sarbat means ‘equality for all’.
