SBOT 20th Annual Surrey Business Excellence Awards Dinner – Maple Organics Award
1. Please provide information about your background – what did you study, where did you grow up?
I grew up in Surrey, mostly Whalley. After high school at Queen Elizabeth, I chose Douglas College over UBC to start post secondary. I then transferred to UBC in 2nd year and graduated in 2003. In 2007, I attended the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.
2. What inspired you to create Maple Organics?
Ashley and I believe a cleaner lifestyle could result into healthier people. Our products are certified clean, effective and sustainable meaning everyone is better off using them. By using the direct sales model, we are able to support local families to flexibly earn for their families. These two aspects – healthier and happier families is why we created Maple Organics.
3. How do you overcome challenges in your business?
We have a strong friendship at the root of our business. The trust and care means we are honest in understanding each other’s perspectives. This transparency and faith in mutually positive intentions has allowed us to overcome any challenges.
4. What is your advice for budding business owners?
Believe in yourself. Look within yourself for your measures of success. Your only competition is you – strive to do your best and when you know you’ve given just that, you will achieve success.
5. What’s next for Maple Organics?
We have many new products coming in 2019 and we look forward to launching them across Canada. We are actively seeking entrepreneurs across Canada to run their own businesses selling Maple Organics products.
6. What does the Surrey Board of Trade award mean for you and Ashley?
We are so proud to be recognized for this award. The SBOT is a critical part of building businesses in Surrey and we hope to be a part of this community for years to come.
7. Where do you see Maple Organics in 5+ years?
We’ll be established in new markets. Our focus is Asia and bringing our message of health and happiness across the world.
8. What is your favourite quote and why?
Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. It means hard work is the only path to success.
9. Who is your biggest role model?
10. What do you love most about being a Surrey resident?
I love and am so grateful for everything that makes me Surrey. This city has given me ‘the spirit of a hustler and the swagger of a college kid’, a quote from rapper T.I. It captures the spirit of this city in many ways. We’re authentic, hard working and proud.
