Episode 1 | Jasleen Kaur

Meet Jasleen Kaur, a young filmmaker with a powerful documentary ‘Maple: A Documentary.’ Her film is about the murder of Maple Batalia, a young woman slain at SFU in Surrey in 2011. Jasleen, also an Indo-Canadian woman from Surrey, was drawn to Maple’s story because they were born in the same year and share a birthday.

Her film has become a voice for not only Maples family, but other victims of violence who are seeking change in our community. The final public showing of her film, took place on what would have been her 26th birthday, March 4, at the Westminster Savings Lecture Theater on the Simon Fraser University Surrey campus. There were not enough seats for everyone who came to support Maple’s family and watch the film.

In this episode of The Change Makers, Jasleen shares with us her journey and why she created the film.

With classy whites as his base, unique contemporary beauty looks and the Parisian music put together a fabulous show that will stay in our memory for a long time. The gorgeous whites romanced with a combination of pastel and bright embroidery. The unibrow beauty look on the models kept the styling understated and pleasant. The gowns not only showcased the highest level of intricate craftsmanship but also featured some inspiring cuts and silhouettes. The hooded numbers were our favourite because we’re obsessed with big hoods! Check out his collection in the pictures to get a taste of how lovely the entire affair was.

JJ VALAYA:

Our show at the FDCI Amazon India Fashion Week in association with Nexa is not our Couture or Bridal show (as would probably have been expected), but instead is a celebration marking JJ Valaya’s completion of a quarter of a century in the wonderful world of style and fashion. We thank all our patrons and supporters for being a part of this beautiful journey and indeed, we now look forward to many even more interesting and exciting initiatives in the years to come.

On this momentous occasion and through this show, we introduce, this season, a line of occasion-wear enembles based on three of our all time favorite inspirations; ones that shall now be known as the CLASSICS OF JJ VALAYA.

– JJ VALAYA

  • GULISTAN | Our gentle homage to nature… A line of sinuous silhouettes… signature prints and antique embroideries interpret a personal favourite of JJ Valaya… Flowers.
  • JAMAVAR | A much celebrated inspiration and a constant fascination of ours, this line works the magic of the Indian paisleys and the intricacies of the jamavar motifs in a modern interpretion.
  • PUNJAB | A humble tribute to our roots, this year’s interpretation stands inspired by the court dressing of the Maharajas of Kapurthala.

These 3 Valaya staples will hereafter co-exist as perennials along with our seasonal collections, both as Couture and as Occasion wear, albeit, with a new twist year after year.

My name is a Joseph Kafka a.k.a “Little Bird”, and I am a video content creator and storyteller, who has a habit of letting my curiosity and tenacity get the better of me. Like other creators and storytellers, that curiosity has led me to some amazing people, and discovering some important truths: 1) Whether your Business to Business or Business to Customer, it’s all people to people 2) The shortest distance between two people is a story 3) Discovery is the pathway to creativity and sharing. These discoveries were no accident. The very name “Little Bird,” which comes from my Aboriginal and European heritage symbolizes the spirit of discovery, creativity, and sharing.
