Just a scenic ferry ride away, our province’s capital is a gem of a city located on an island that boasts a mild climate, unrivaled parks and beaches, and a thriving arts community. From Surrey, the Tsawwassen ferry terminal is approximately 30 minutes away – among the call of the gulls, the big boat belches and the waft of salty sea air, a sense of adventure awakens as soon as you arrive.
Whether you are going to Victoria for a romantic weekend getaway, a solo retreat, or a family vacation, you are going to need to eat! Thankfully, this city-with-small-town-vibes offers some amazing culinary experiences.
Listed below are just 5 foods you absolutely need to bite into during your stay – let us know if you’ve tried any of these, and of course, tell us where we should take our appetites on our next trip across the Salish sea!
1. New York style cheesecake at Frankie’s Modern Diner
Baked from scratch, this towering, fruit-topped slice of heaven will catch your eye as part of an impressive display of homemade desserts in the restaurant’s fridge – conveniently located just behind the reception area so that you can pick out your sweet treat before you even know what you are having for lunch or dinner!
2. Battered Cod & Fries at Barb’s Fish & Chips Floating Seafood Restaurant
Named one of the top 10 seafood spots by the sea in North America by Sunset Magazine, this floating restaurant in Fisherman’s Wharf is a multiple winner of the Best in the City award – and your tastebuds won’t refute that. Insider scoop: if you aren’t a fan of fish but end up at Barb’s with your seafood-loving family, their chicken strips are also something to write home about!
3. Kalamari & Spanakopita Dinner at Millo’s Greek Restaurant
Family owned and operated for almost 4 decades, this award-winning restaurant offers an extensive menu of all your Greek favourites as well as some Italian dishes, too. Because you can choose two sides as part of your dinner you can have the best of everything if you come up with a game plan with your partner: pictured above is a shared portion of the spankopita and kalamari dinners with Greek-style lemon potato, and salad. Not pictured above are the rice and vegetables also consumed off my husband’s plate!
4. Capricciosa Verde Pizza at Pizzeria Prima Strada
Pizzeria Prima Strada came highly recommended by my Instagram friends who responded to my query of places I must take my family. In addition to the fascination we all seem to have of watching pizza dough being stretched and topped and then placed in a woodfire oven, we were equally enthralled by the Italian named pizzas and unique toppings. The pie above has a basil pesto sauce and perfectly roasted mushrooms, artichoke hearts and red peppers.
5. Chocolate Dipped Cone at Chocolats Favoris
And last but certainly not least – especially because this is the ONLY location in Western Canada – you must try this chocolate/candy/ice cream bar located right in downtown. In particular, ask for a vanilla soft serve cone dipped in one of their 12 specialty chocolate sauces (we tried Cookies ‘n Cream, Hazelnut Crunch and Salted Caramel). This isn’t your typical dipped cone; this is basically a chocolate-bar-thick coating that hardens into absolute perfection. You’ll be thinking about it long after it’s gone!
