Merchant Shout-Out: Studio 73

In true artistic fashion, Studio 73 was spawned by mistake with no concrete intention of building a business. The studio originally worked on multiple fronts with woodworking and pottery, however it was the accidental discovery of creating glass from a ceramic kiln that is responsible for the type of business it is today. This was new as they had formerly used the kiln only for pottery. They saw great possibilities with the glass and decided that they should make a go of it as a small business and to focus on the glass alone. This is not a common practice for most other art galleries or artists, adding to the uniqueness of this business. The pieces are created out of fusible glass which is handcrafted and they are best described as functional art; they can be put on display or used. In stumbling into this craft Jodi, the current day coordinator, realized the...

She is involved in every aspect from operating the business to serving to dealing with customers. The latter of which she says is the best part of her job. Some of her customers having been coming back for the last 15 years, from when they were school children to now adults. Merchant Shout-Out: Wings Tap & Grill

What food is more social than wings? Put a table of people together; add a few drinks, a plate of wings and suddenly everyone is family. That is the inspiration behind Wings. They make a lot more than just chicken wings, it is their sense of togetherness that drives everything they do. It can be seen in their menu, the way their staff treat guests, and their community involvement. While they bring people great food at affordable prices, their interest runs much deeper than that. When Wings Tap & Grill first opened over 15 years ago, they recognized that Newton had an amazing community filled with diverse people and felt it needed a location to bring all of these people together. Through the years, Wings has gained many regular customers who visit often to share major life moments such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and retirements. Wings believes that their incredible...

Merchant Shout-Out: BBQ Nation

Most children play with their food but that experience goes largely dormant for many. Kanwar at BBQ Nation, however, developed it into a business. As a child, he was always playing with his food and was interested in trying and creating different dishes. Interested in the aesthetics as well as the taste; Kanwar tried to vary the presentation of dishes even though they might use the exact same recipe. Years of watching cooking shows and reading cook books further piqued his interest and he developed a passion for creating unique dishes. This passion turned into a business opportunity as he wanted to open up a restaurant that would serve all different kinds of dishes. He believed that such a diverse menu would only succeed in a multicultural area. Newton fit the criteria perfectly as he knew of the growth potential that this district has to offer. Opened less than a...

A celebration of community in Newton

By Bronwyn Scott Jan 13, 2013 Word count: 271 After last week’s tragic killing outside Newton Arena, Philip Aguirre, chef owner at the Old Surrey Restaurant, is focusing on the positives and community cohesion. On Sunday evening, Jan. 12, the restaurant opened its doors to its long established customer base for an evening of complimentary appetizers and drinks to mark their 40th year in business and to celebrate the community.   Live music by White Rock’s Neil Harnett and private label Kettle Valley wine helped make the occasion. From 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Old Surrey was a bustling, lively, exalted hub of activity. “Just seeing everyone with joy and excitement, it’s exciting. It’s exciting for Newton, it’s exciting for us to celebrate forty years,” said Aguirre. “It’s just been a way for us to bring our customer base together and to celebrate what we’re doing here and to celebrate our...
