I am Blake Sebastian, the founder and creator of “BareTalk TV.” A fast and informative Canadian news and entertainment channel on Facebook and YouTube created for millennials who want to stay informed while on the go. “BareTalk TV” was created to accommodate the demand by millennials for entertaining and educational content that isn’t filtered. It takes a stand for creatives who are tired of being monitored, journalists who want to showcase their individuality and opinions without being censored, and viewers who seek truth and transparency with a side of humour.
As someone who has worked professionally in media for seven years, I’ve realized a number of things. Things most people don’t want to or don’t care to talk about. I first got involved in media at the age of 17. I dabbled in the world of broadcasting and was involved on-air for a number of publications. I completed my Journalism diploma at the age of 20 and have mostly worked in post-production since then.
I’ve met a lot of people with influence: journalists, and local and national celebrities. I’ve met a lot of them and I’ve interviewed a lot of them. I am also friends with many journalists. I’ve seen the same trend over and over again: public figures who have to act a certain way to keep their job. Certain public figures that can’t share their opinions on their social media over fear they’ll get fired. This is especially true for journalists – after all, they have to be unbiased, right?
Journalists have to be poised and “proper.” It’s part of their job to be that way. They portray an image of being “perfect,” meanwhile many of them on Saturday nights will get drunk and puke on the floor just like any other average Joe would. Trust me, many of these people aren’t “proper” outside of business hours and while away from the cameras. And none of them are unbiased – they all have strong opinions over EVERYTHING and I’ve heard some good rants.
I recall several conversations with journalists and creatives who have felt frustrated because they can’t be themselves, or god forbid they make an opinionated tweet over a political news story that would get their boss on their ass for having a mind of their own. I too in the past have felt I couldn’t express my thoughts. For some time I also found myself on the other side of the microphone, being interviewed. I’ve been interviewed by both local and very large publications.
Even then, I filtered out about 50 percent of my actual opinions over fear that that wasn’t what the media wanted from me or not what people wanted to hear. Yes, I’ve given interviews where I have filtered out strong opinions of mine because “you gotta give people what they want.” Well, I am at a point where I am tired. I am tired of the filtering nature of media. I am tired of not being able to express my thoughts how I’ve wanted to. And I am tired of seeing others feel the same way. That’s why I’ve created “BareTalk TV.”
A place where professionals in media can meet and talk, and say whatever the fuck they want to say. A place where people can be candid and be themselves. A place where you can find humour, realness and witty insights, from Bare, unfiltered minds.
