Armed with sassy- silliness and a g-force of glitter, these ladies pack a sparkly punch that keeps audiences coming back for more. The Cheesecake Burlesque Revue are multiple award-winners who have dazzled and delighted audiences all over the world, as well as across Canada. The secret to their success is that as well as bringing laughter, their shows are about body positivity, inclusivity, and empowerment; and the diversity of the performers means everyone in the audience can see themselves and feel represented. A Cheesecake Burlesque Revue show is very reminiscent of vaudevillian performances of years gone by, and audiences can expect the 90-minute show of two halves to be filled with audience interaction as well as belly laughs that will leave them sore.
How the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue troupe came to be is quite the happy accident. Fourteen years ago, a group of friends signed up for a burlesque workshop, and they found that they had so much fun, that they decided to put on some shows—then their success just snowballed—or 'cheesecaked'!
A whirlwind year after that first workshop the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue were a professional troupe. Champagne Sparkles has been with the troop since the beginning and she said the reason why she loves being part of the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue is simple, “There are three reasons why I love performing so much. One, I get to travel with an amazing group of women. Two, burlesque really is an art form where you get to craft and create amazing stories, and finally, my favourite reason is the audience reaction: just how much audiences love and react to our diversity. Experiencing their positivity is something that in the beginning we didn’t know we’d create, and I’m so grateful for that. I love how much our show empowers people—it never gets old.”
Tickets for the show are $25–$35 and can be bought online at: tickets.surrey.ca or from the box office at 604-501-5566.
As well as the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue show on the Main Stage Theatre, there is also a Burlesque Dance Workshop for Women earlier in the day, where women can learn to strut their own stuff. The cost of the workshop is $30, and it is open to anyone over the age of 18, identifying as female.
