Bright Beginnings FoundationLaying a Pathway to a Bright Future
Everyone who lives, works or visits Surrey, BC are witness to the effects of poverty. Every day they see the ways that financial challenges impact their lives. Many of the students live in generational poverty. Poverty that persists from one generation to the next because no one in the family had the means to break the cycle of poverty.
Many of these students have scholastic aptitude but do not have the financial ability to attain a post-secondary education that would provide them with a well-paid occupation.
Tremendous potential is wasted if these students are not given the chance to succeed.
That’s where Bright Beginning Foundation (BBF) comes in. Facilitated by three retired Surrey teachers and two still working for the Surrey School District, BBF helps Surrey students marginalized by poverty by providing full bursaries for tuition, educational materials, and student fees while they attend a college or university and program of their choice.
Each year students who are struggling with financial challenges are invited to apply for the BBF Bursary. We currently are supporting two students. The first is in her second year of a four-year program at Simon Fraser University. The second student is in his first year at Vancouver Community College. A BBFBursary opens the door to full-time, well-paid and permanent careers for our students.
When Bright Beginnings Foundation sponsors students, Surrey’s economy benefits because families have increased buying power. Surrey’s social fabric also improves because health, shelter and food security issues can be addressed. BBF, potentially, benefits future generations by breaking the cycle of generational poverty
We are supported, with both money and encouragement, by the Surrey Teachers’ Association and the RR Smith Memorial Foundation (Retired Teachers’ Association) and K.E.A.T.Canada. We also have individual donors, monthly donors and Legacy Patrons.
Bright Beginnings Foundation is a Bursary Fund under the umbrella of Vancity Community Foundation. We are solely a volunteer-driven group and 99% of donations goes to supporting our students. Our website is www.BrightBeginningsFoundation.ca
