Bus Tour with Omer Arbel

May 4 | 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Surrey, BC – In conjunction with their feature spring exhibit Omer Arbel: Particles for the Built World opening April 13, Surrey Art Gallery is offering a bus tour to two homes designed by Arbel in South Surrey on Saturday, May 4 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ages 16+. Cost is $39. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 12pm for registration and to visit the related exhibit. Refreshments will be provided at the tour destination. Presented as part of Crafted Vancouver.

Participants will meet at Surrey Art Gallery for an orientation and then embark with Omer Arbel and Gallery Curator Jordan Strom for a tour of Arbel’s 75.9 house under construction. This sprawling rancher with sweeping vistas of Surrey farmland features fabric-formed concrete pillars that resemble inverted trumpets or “gigantic fabric socks” as Arbel likes to call them. They add curves to an otherwise modernist rectilinear house and are hollow to hold the roots of rooftop trees. A spliced-up model of one is on view at Surrey Art Gallery.

The group will then proceed to Arbel’s 23.2 home for a reception, talk, and tour. Arbel completed this home for a client in 2010. Visitors will be able to walk through this award-winning project of incredible dimensions. Arbel’s innovative use of concrete and other materials will inspire dialogue on contemporary design, sculpture, and architecture.
