Want to have a thriving garden that helps local wildlife, including birds, butterflies and bees? Join speakers from the South Coast Conservation Program, along with the Grow Green Guide and the UBC Botanical Garden, for a free introductory afternoon workshop on how to create a nature-friendly backyard using native plants.

Speakers:

Tamsin Baker will give an overview on various helpful resources, and discuss how adding native plants to your garden will support local wildlife. Since 2012, Tamsin has been the Stewardship Coordinator for the SCCP. She coordinates the Nature Stewards program helping landowners improve their backyards for wildlife, with a focus on Species at Risk in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.

Karin England will introduce Metro Vancouver’s Grow Green initiative (growgreenguide.ca). In her position as a Park Planner for Metro Vancouver Regional Parks, Karin brings to life the organizations’ mandate to protect sensitive ecosystems and to connect people to nature.

Ben Stormes, Curator & Horticulturist for the North American Gardens at UBC Botanical Garden, will highlight approaches to native plant gardening at home, tips and tricks to long term success and an overview of some of his favorite native plant choices. Ben has an extensive horticultural background.

He came to the UBC garden in July of 2017 following master’s degree program in Public Garden Leadership fro the School of Integrated Plant Science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Prior to his graduate degree, he worked as an instructor and curator for The Niagara Parks Botanical Garden and School of Horticulture, and has also worked with The University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden and The Royal Botanical Gardens, Ontario.

Participants will each get a paper copy of the 'Gardening with Native Plants in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley' guide.

Registration is required. Light refreshments will be served.
