Sean Alistair’s couture paintings are full of materials: paint, beads, fabric, plastic, and anything else he can sew down.
Using video, he’ll share how he creates his work, while discussing his battle with mental illness and fighting against homophobia in the fashion industry—experiences that have given him the courage to break with convention.
“What's most important to me is that my work lives—it changes with the light, inspires and surprises. I purposely add details or use materials that can only be seen at a certain angle or when the light hits it at that perfect direction,” says Alistair.
Hear Sean’s inspiring story that proves you don’t always have to follow the rules.
About the Artist
Sean Alistair studied Visual Art in high school but stopped after graduating to start a career in fashion, creating store displays for high-end retailers. In his late 20s, he picked up an embroidery needle and thread as a way to distract himself from the numbing pain of heartbreak. Within two years, Sean has made over 50 pieces of mixed media embroidery works, been the guest activation artist for the BC Children’s Hospital Crystal Ball, and has participated in two local group shows and one large solo exhibit on Vancouver Island. He lives in Vancouver.
