Varvara and Mar: We Are the Clouds
January 30−April 26, 2020
Preview night: Thursday, January 23 | 8 p.m.
Surrey, BC – Surrey Art Gallery is excited to present a new interactive artwork at UrbanScreen. Varvara & Mar: We Are the Clouds will be on display from January 30 to April 26, 2020, with a special preview on January 23 at 8 p.m. The artwork will be visible every night starting half an hour after sunset until midnight. It can also be seen onsite and from the Skytrain going past Gateway Station. Admission is free.
Have you ever seen yourself in the clouds? Estonia-based art duo Varvara & Mar's site-specific artwork We Are the Clouds delights visitors to Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre with a playful twist on the self-portrait: the cloud portrait.
Using software designed specifically for the project, in conjunction with a Microsoft Kinect camera, We Are the Clouds captures imagery of Surrey community members and re-interprets it into the form of clouds. Visitors can perform live in front of an onsite kiosk and have their “cloud persona” appear immediately onscreen, projected onto a brilliant blue sky across the side of the recreation centre. Capturing only the silhouette of a given participant, the technology allows all prospective cloud-makers to contribute to the formation of an ephemeral cloud community, which will appear on the screen.
Prior to the exhibition's opening date, Surrey locals were invited to attend production workshops with the artists, where their on-camera performances were recorded to create the initial body of imagery. The artists intend the project to bring locals together within a space of play-making and creativity. The use of the silhouette is a reminder that everyone is invited and welcome to participate.
“We Are the Clouds is a lot of fun, but it is also a subtle commentary on the relationship between play-making and community-building,” says Surrey Art Gallery Assistant Curator Rhys Edwards. “Every participant’s movement becomes part of a larger choreography, where people’s gestures play off of each other to create a space of generosity, leisure, and calm.”
We Are the Clouds comprises part of Surrey Art Gallery's 2020 winter exhibition programming. Other shows include Susan Point: Spindle Whorl, a prolific display of silkscreen prints from the Vancouver Art Gallery; Don Li-Leger: Counting the Steps of the Sun, featuring vivid colour works from the late artist; and How Green is Your Muse?, a celebration of nature from the Filipino Music and Art Foundation. Surrey Art Gallery will celebrate these exhibitions at its opening reception on Saturday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m.

The Firehall Arts Centre is thrilled to celebrate International Women's Day with the world premiere of Talking Sex on Sunday from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, March 8, 2020.
On the first Sunday of every month, Margot and her lady pals always host a theme party. What happens when Margot decides to kick it up a notch by having a Sex Toy Party?
In this new musical comedy by Sara-Jeanne Hosie and Nico Rhodes, we witness these women share fears, reveal dirty secrets, explore new possibilities, and find the power of female friendship. Directed by Donna Spencer, Talking Sex on Sunday features performances from such fierce females as Janet Gigliotti, Jennifer Lines, Sara Vickruck, Irene Karas Loeper, Caitriona Murphy, Katrina Reynolds, and Seana-Lee Wood.
"I am delighted to be working with such a powerhouse team of actresses on this wonderful new work created by Sara-Jeanne and Nico," says Spencer. "It's a perfect piece for late winter and reminds us how for so many years – and even now – women have not spoken openly or been proud of their sexuality. Dr Ruth has done her best to get us talking, but there is always more to be said."

"Gut-burstingly funny with a huge heart"—Vancouver Sun
SURREY, B.C. (Jan. 29, 2020)—Kim's Convenience, Ins Choi’s hilarious and touching debut play set in a family-run corner store, will be coming to Surrey Civic Theatre’s Main Stage from February 19 to March 1, 2020.
Mr. Kim (James Yi), or Appa, a Korean shopkeeper in Toronto's Regent Park area, grapples with both a changing neighborhood landscape and the chasm between him and his second-generation Canadian offspring. This journey of a fractured but loving family confronting the future and forgiving the past is a Canadian classic in the making.
Kim's Convenience was originally produced as part of the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, where it won the New Play Contest and the Patron's Pick Award. It went on to an enormously successful run in 2012 at Soulpepper, receiving the Toronto Theatre Critics' Award for Best New Canadian Play and spawning a nine-city national tour. The play has since been published by House of Anansi Press and has been adapted into an award-winning television series for CBC and now, Netflix.
Ins Choi is a Korean Canadian actor, playwright, and director known for his plays Kim's Convenience and Subway Stations of the Cross. Born in South Korea, Choi grew up in Scarborough, Ontario, and now resides in Toronto with his family.
A graduate of York University’s Theatre Program, Choi has performed with Fu-GEN, Canadian Stage, the Stratford Festival, and Soulpepper.
Director Kaitlin Williams said, "Having the opportunity to bring the show and Appa's story to more communities is incredible. For me, this is a story about reconciliation, sacrifice, and deep family love. It means so much to our cast and creative team and we look forward to sharing it with audiences again."
STARRING: Andrew Creightney (Rich/Mr. Lee/Mike/Alex), Howie Lai (Jung), Jessie Liang (Janet), James Yi (Appa), Maki Yi (Umma)
CREATIVE TEAM: Kaitlin Williams (Director), Carolyn Rapanos (Set Designer), Jessica Oostergo (Costume Designer), Ted Roberts (Tour Lighting Designer), Jonathan Kim (Original Lighting Designer), Chengyan Boon (Sound Designer), Allison Spearin (Stage Manager), April Starr Land (Assistant Stage Manager), Soran Nakai (Assistant Director).
Tickets for the show are $29–$49 and can be bought online at tickets.surrey.ca or from the box office at 604-501-5566.
