Fundraiser Revamps Playground One Recycled Appliance at a Time

The Fun Fun Park Recycling Fair was held on Saturday, September 21 at Fun Fun Park in Surrey and was a great success! More than 300 people attended the event, dropping off their small appliances and power tools for recycling. Among the items to be dropped off at the park – where they were recycled for free – were four treadmills/ellipticals, a cycling machine, and countless microwaves – no small feat!

The fundraiser was held to benefit Fun Fun Park which is greatly in need of major enhancements to better serve kids of all ages. With an overall fundraising goal of $35,000, by spring 2014 has been set by the Fun Fun Park Playground Project, the community group leading the charge. To date, the group has raised approximately $20,000. ElectroRecycle, B.C.’s small appliance and power tool recycling program, came on board to support the initiative. Community members were encouraged to drop off their electrical products (ex. Toasters, microwaves, electric toothbrushes, power tools, and more) to raise funds for the playground improvements.

For every kg. that was recycled, $1 will be donated up to 5,000 kg. to Fun Fun Park by ElectroRecycle. While the total collection number is not yet known, Fun Fun Park did raise an additional $1,000 in donations and raffle ticket sales.

There were lots of activities at the event to enjoy including a raffle, silent auction, bouncy castle, COBs Bread Fun Bun station, face painting, and performance by Zox of the Forest. Children also had an opportunity to learn more about helping the environment through recycling activities presented by the ElectroRecycle Ambassadors. Both the Surrey Fire Service and the Surrey RCMP also stopped by to show their support.
