The HSBC City of Bhangra Festival came to Surrey on Saturday to Celebrate the Harvest.
The day was filled with performances from dance groups of all ages and featured traditional and modern bhangra music. It was great to see so many people enjoying the festivities, being interactive and learning about Bhangra music and dance.
The concept of Celebrate the Harvest joins people together to not only appreciate arts and culture, but also to provide an opportunity for people to discover the richness of all cultures within their communities.
This year’s Celebrate the Harvest featured Israeli folk dancers and Punjabi dancers coming together for the first time on stage.
There were a good number of volunteers mingling in the crowd and we got a chance to chat with some of them about their involvement in this year’s festival. Volunteerism is important to execute an event such as this, and it was great to see a diverse group of people giving their time for a community – building opportunity. Props to this year’s volunteers for the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival 2012.
There are many events to discover as the Festival runs to June 10th. The free lunch time concert series featuring Punjabi folk music starts tomorrow at Central City and Downtown Vancouver.
