Surrey, B.C. – As one of Canada’s fastest growing cities, 2017 will be a transformative year for Surrey as the city starts planning and building several large investment projects. Currently, there are over 500,000 people living in Surrey, and that number is expected to increase by another 300,000 over the next three decades. With such tremendous growth and potential comes the need for more infrastructure and amenities. This year especially, expect to see the community’s skyline start to change as major developments take shape across the city.

GEC Education Mega Center

In 2017, the old Stardust Roller Rink site will begin its transformation, starting with the development of the new 50-story GEC Education Mega Center. The demand for educational and housing infrastructure for students in Surrey is constantly growing, and the project will provide new classroom space, a computer centre, an electronic library, student lounge and residential suites.

Simon Fraser University expansion

As announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Christy Clark late last year, Simon Fraser University (SFU) will also begin the new $126-million expansion of its Surrey Campus. Expected to open in 2018, the new 160,000- squre-foot building will grant new degree-granting programs in energy systems and environmental engineering.

YMCA Facility

Recreation amenities are expected to expand as the population of Surrey continues to grow, and a brand-new YMCA facility will be constructed in order to meet this need. The Downtown Surrey BIA will be assisting with the capital campaign for the construction the facility, which is to be completed in either 2020 or 2021. The new YMCA is projected to be over 60,000 square feet with two swimming pools, a gym, a fitness centre, a family development centre and multipurpose rooms.

Recreational Development

The City of Surrey has designated $140 million to various recreational projects in the city.

Along with the new YMCA facility in City Centre, expect to see new developments in the North Surrey Arena, Clayton Heights’ recreation arts and library centre, as well as a new arena for the Cloverdale Fairgrounds.

About the Downtown Surrey BIA: In 2001, a core group of concerned business and property owners in Whalley met to discuss issues of concern in their community. This ad hoc group was interested in the Business Improvement Area (BIA) concept, and saw this as a promising planning and economic development tool for the area.

Since that time, the BIA comprised a vast area of approximately 414 acres in North Surrey. The BIA stretches along the King George Boulevard from 96 to 112 Avenues; and is roughly bounded on the west and east by University Drive and Whalley Boulevard.
