Looking for a weekend away with friends that isn’t going to cost you half a day of travel time? The perfect solution for a mini-escape is not much farther than your backyard and it’s exactly the break from reality that you’re craving. At Cypress Mountain, winter is celebrated and there is something for all levels of skill and adventure!
Just a short distance from downtown Vancouver, situated on the North Shore, Vancouver’s largest ski and snowboard resort is a haven for locals and tourists alike – whether it’s the downhill thrill you pursue or the picturesque snowshoeing trails. With a group of friends who are up for an amazing winter experience, you will have memories and Instagram-worthy pics to get you through your next work week! (Don’t forget to use #CypressMountain on those Instagram photos so they can repost your fun!)
A little advance preparation will save you some money on the mountain; book your lift tickets online a few days before you plan to go and pocket the savings! Also, you can book your lessons and tours through their website so that once you arrive, you can just focus on the important things – like the scenery and fresh mountain air.
Because Cypress is located so close to other cities there isn’t lodging right at the ski resort, which provides an opportunity to spend some time exploring new areas. Then after a good night’s sleep, get ready for another full west coast day.
Here are some activities you can include in your Cypress weekend getaway with your pals:
- The Snowshoe Tours are more than just your average trek along a trail – they are full-on experiences. If you and your friends love live music, you’ll want to check out the Music Night Tour where, after a snowy hike, you are treated to a show at the Hollyburn Lodge on Saturday nights. If you’re a group of girls, you may be interested in the Girls Night Out Tour. Did I mention there’s chocolate fondue included in that one? Guaranteed there is a tour that suits your group!
- Being a novice on the hills shouldn’t hold you back from the fun! In fact, spending a couple hours with the highly-praised Ski School will give you the confidence to fly down those slopes! Cypress offers small group lessons for adults – so sign up the whole gang for a two-hour or full day!
- If it’s a cross-country experience you’re after, book some Skate-Ski lessons. The Friday night Girls Night Out class is a blast; after a great workout you can indulge in some tasty appetizers served at the Hollyburn Lodge (included). A mixed-group of guys and girls can enjoy lessons as well, tailored to your comfort level.
- Just because you’re technically a group of adults having an adult getaway, doesn’t mean you can’t let your inner kid out to play! Go ahead and spend some time at the Snow Tube Park – you won’t be sorry you did. Nothing says ‘stress relief’ like zipping down a chute 100 m in length. Best part? You don’t even have to climb back up. Just hop on the tube tow to catch your breath, before you do it again!
- It’s pretty much a given that all that exercise and fresh air is going to make you ravenous. Thankfully, Cypress Mountain is home to some restaurants, pubs and cafes including the Crazy Raven Bar & Grill where you can enjoy a fireplace, beautiful views and one of their incredible burgers. A fully licensed restaurant, it even has a signature Crazy Raven Pale Ale along with a selection of beers, liquors and wines. Be sure to check their schedule of events for live entertainment and specials.
Before you head up, remember to check weather conditions and take a peek at their Mountain Report for up-to-date information.
Fortis BC Rebates On New Furnaces And Water Heaters
Fortis BC is currently offering impressive rebates on new space and water heating systems. These include new furnaces, boilers, hot water tanks, tankless water heaters, and more.
Furnaces heat most homes in BC. Older furnaces can be as little as 65% efficient, meaning that 35% of the heat produced is lost out the chimney. By comparison, new furnaces are over 90% efficient and when you install a new one Fortis BC will give you a rebate of up to $1150. Conditions apply. Click here for details.
Instead of heating up air and blowing it through your home like a furnace, a boiler heats water instead. This water is then distributed through lines in the floor as part of a radiant heating system, or through radiators around the edge of the home as part of a baseboard heating system.
Some new boilers, called “combination boilers” can provide hot water for both space heating and tap water, replacing both your current boiler and hot water tank. When you install a new combination boiler, you can receive a rebate of up to $1500. Click here for details.
Hot Water Tanks & Tankless Water Heaters
Most homes in BC have a hot water tank which keeps a store of hot water for use. You can get a Fortis BC rebate of $200 when you install an Energy Star hot water tank (as always, conditions apply). These tanks use less energy since they have a valve that closes off the vent when the tank is not in use, preventing heat from being wasted. Click here for details.
Tankless water heaters produce hot water as you use it. They never run out of hot water, although a limited amount can be provided at any time. Since a store of hot water is not always being kept even when you aren’t using any, tankless systems are typically more efficient than tanks. You can receive a Fortis BC rebate of up to $1000 when you install a high efficiency water heater.
Surrey Super Hot Boiler Repair
Super Hot boilers are made at Allied Engineering’s Factory in North Vancouver. They are undoubtedly the most common type of boiler in Surrey. They are known for being well made, reliable boilers. However, like all mechanical devices, they can still break down occasionally.
Boilers heat up water for home heating. This water is then distributed through lines in the floor as part of a radiant heating system, or through radiators around the edge of the home as part of a baseboard heating system.
At Good Guys heating, we have several heating service technicians who specialize in hot water heating systems. Since Super Hot boilers are so common in our area, it should come as no surprise that we have extensive expertise regarding these systems.
We can tune up these units for as little as $149, after our $40 new customer discount.
If you just want your current system fixed, we can diagnose your problem for our $89 evaluation fee. We will then let you know the price for completing your repair.
If you want a new boiler system, we can provide a free in-home quotation. Call 604 GOOD GUY (604 466 3489) to schedule. FortisBC rebates are currently available on high efficiency boilers.
For more information, see our boilers page.
Surrey Boiler & Radiant In-Floor Heating Services
Right now FortisBC is offering rebates of up to $1000 on new high efficiency boilers. Old boilers can be as little as 60% efficient, meaning up to 40% of the energy they consume is wasted. By comparison, new high efficiency boilers are over 90% efficient. The rebate can rise to up to $1500 if you install a combination boiler. A combination boiler will replace both your boiler and hot water tank to provide hot water for both home heating and tap water.
Good Guys offers free in-home quotations on new boilers. We can give you a variety of options that suit your home’s needs. Call 604 GOOD GUY (604 466 3489) to schedule your quote.
Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure your boiler is running as reliably, efficiently, and safely as possible. Boiler breakdowns usually happen at the most inconvenient time- during the coldest days of winter when it’s hard to get a service technician out to fix it.
Fortunately, most problems can be prevented by routine maintenance or detected in advance. Regular maintenance is also necessary to keep your boiler’s warranty valid- it is now required by all of the major manufacturers.
Boiler tune ups start at $189 and new customers are eligible for a $40 discount (just mention our online tune up special for new customers).
Good Guys has some of Greater Vancouver’s most experienced boiler service and repair technicians. Our service technicians are licenced gasfitters and attend regular company training to ensure they can quickly and accurately diagnose boiler problems. They drive well stocked trucks, so they can often fix problems in a single trip.

Dishwasher Repair: Important Things to Know
Having dishwasher problems? Find out how to solve this issue in this guide:
Because fixing your dishwasher isn’t an emergency, you can quickly call a dishwasher repair in Barrie service to fix the problem immediately. On some occasions, you have the opportunity to DIY fix the dishwasher before calling for professional assistance.
The following tips should help you repair your dishwasher that doesn’t run properly. Also, there will be some insight on what accessories you should not include in the machine. By knowing these two concepts, you can fix your dishwasher within minutes. So let’s get started!
My Dishwasher Keeps Filling
Start by reaching in the cabinet and pick up the dome shaped plastic float switch. If the switch doesn’t lift up, take the plastic top from the stem. After that, proceed by scrubbing the stem fully clean. Then replace the dome. If it starts to move freely, then you can proceed to step 2.
Find out which wires are attached to your float switch terminals, and with small pieces of tape, label the wires for future reference if you need to change the switch. Set your ohm-meter dial to rx100 and place the two probes to the terminals.
When lifting up the float, the tester needle needs to give an infinity reading. And once the float drops, it should give a 0 rating. If this doesn’t happen, then you should replace the switch. Unscrew the ohm-meter dial from your tub, bring it to your local hardware store, buy an additional replacement, and start installing it.
Things Not to Include In Your Dishwasher
Your dishwasher works properly, but it’s not good enough to remove all the hidden cheese found in the cheese grater holes.
“To make sure that there is no hardened cheese in your next meal, you should watch your cheese grater with a soapy stone,” Roger stated.
Nonstick pans come in handy when making a grilled cheese that doesn’t leave a mess on the bottom of the pan. But you will refrain from placing your nonstick cookware in your dishwasher.
“Unless your manufacturer states that the item is dishwasher safe each time, placing it in the dishwasher can remove the nonstick coating. This causes it to ruin the pan’s nonstick finish and make your food stick on the pan”.
“In your dishwasher, the knives are already rubbing up against your cutlery, which can become dull.” Roger stated “Unless the dishwasher has a separate rack for knives, don’t use the dishwasher as it will nick the other items in the dishwasher.
My Dishwasher is Leaking
If you’re experiencing nuisance leaks on your dishwasher, you might be using a detergent that’s creating too much suds. Reduce the amount of detergent you use and find out if that makes a difference.
If your dishes are loaded improperly, it will cause the water to spill through the vents. Usually, door leaks come from a faulty door tightness or gasket. Also, you should make sure you contact a dishwasher repair in Barrie service to help solve this issue.
In the end, the quality of your dishwasher repair depends on the team you hire for repairs. When looking for them, make sure that they are great at communicating and repairing the dishwasher immediately. Thus, try to fully get your dishwasher repair in Barrie service to ensure that your dishwasher continues to run properly.
Enter To Win $500 And Learn How Surrey’s Farmers Are Affected By Climate Change
If you’ve driven by flooded farm fields or caught footage of the storm surges at Crescent Beach this winter, you’ve seen evidence of a number of things: Surrey has a large area of floodplains within its boundaries, and our current flood management system requires some updating.
Surrey has over 35 km of coastline and about 20% of our land is sitting on floodplains. Boundary Bay, Mud Bay, the Nicomekl and Serpentine Rivers, through Cloverdale toward Newton, the Campbell River and Semiahmoo First Nation are areas we frequent, live in or farm. Due to climate change which is causing sea levels to rise and extreme weather conditions, the way we manage these waterways needs to be re-evaluated and updated. Keep reading for a chance to win a $500 Visa gift card when you weigh in with your thoughts on the Mud Bay area.
This 3-minute video does a great job highlighting what we have in place right now which is already a remarkable system. We have over 100 kms of dykes, over 100 kms of flood management ditches, 25 pump stations, 14 spillways and 300 flood boxes. Watch the video to understand how each of these components work and why we need better management. It isn’t just human life that is affected; these waterways are also spawning habitat for salmon and trout, and home to many other wildlife species.
So you can see that the bones of the system are great but we just need to up our game as we deal with conditions we have never experienced before.
Previously, we shared how climate change affects the Crescent Beach community – a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. This time around, we’re looking at our dedicated farmers who have seen this city through much of its development, working hard as families and organizations to bring the best quality product to our tables.
There are many factors which are direct results of climate change that impact our farmers. I had an opportunity to sit down with two local farmers on a much-needed clear, sunny day earlier this month. While admiring the mountain view and the acres of farmland, I asked them questions to learn how the planting season and crop output have changed with the weather.
There are few people who pay attention to the weather more than a farmer. The first crop of the year has to be planted when the soil is dry, which ideally is in February on our beautiful coast. However, because of the extreme rainfalls we experience in February (we aren’t necessarily getting more rain overall, but we get more rain at one time) that opportunity for the first plant is missed. If there is a break in the rain in March, the first crop is seeded then. Sometimes, farmers have to wait till April to plant those first seeds. This pushes the harvest back, of course, because the crops have to be large enough to harvest; they need a certain amount of time in the ground to grow.
If the growth happens quickly, then a second planting can take place. If not, then one crop is all you get. And if the rains start coming down hard again before that first crop is ready to be harvested, then you don’t even get the one crop. This shorter window for a successful crop isn’t just about quantities of food being produced – it’s also about the livelihoods of these farmers.
Farmers rely on the pump stations (shown in the video above) to help them manage flooded fields. However, current management is insufficient during spring storms.
The Coastal Flood Adaptation Strategy was put into place to get residents, farmers and stakeholders together to derive solutions using technology, information and a better awareness of needs.
The City would appreciate your input via this survey on the Mud Bay area. Your response will help them prioritize the coastal flood adaptation options for this area. Completing this survey makes you eligible to win a $500 gift card – so take a few minutes to do so before March 28, 2018.
We really are in this together and your voice is important. Take the time to talk to the City, leave a comment here and fill out the survey to help influence coastal flood management.
